They were pretty cool and capable, especially considering the climate in which they were conceived. The Cosworth Vega was supposed to debut as a 1974 model. It even had an exclusive colour selected, Cosworth Silver. Well it burned a valve during the 50,000 emission certification; engineers were not allowed to make any adjustments like setting valve lash.

They took another crack at certification, but that meant delaying the introduction until 1975. By that time they were simply black with gold wheels and pinstripes. For 1976 they added white and bright blue metallic. They never sold them in Canada AFAIK.

I remember seeing a black one in the mid-seventies at the ''Grand Prix Molson de Trois-Rivières'' in Québec. Didn't check the license plate back then. The car was park ''inside'' where you need to have a pass to be there.

Problem was that they were close in price to a real car, and even with the Cosworth engine the rest of the car was still a junk Vega that you could hear rusting on a quiet night.

That's a good one.  I don't think that was just in the east neither.

My 74 Vega Hatch back four speed stick car did not have one spec of rust on it when i sold it. I bought it around 1978 and other than burning oil..................... it was a sweet little car.  I love Vega's and it is really too bad that GM messed up a nice little car by not putting the cast iron cylinder sleeves in them. By the time GM corrected the problem, it was way too late.

By the winter of 75-76 my 1974 Vega twin= Pontiac (of course!) Astre GT was on its 2nd paint job from rust repair and starting to bubble out again on the tops of the front fenders and was burning a quart of oil every 200 miles or so. I didn't want to sell it as I  knew I would get a knuckle sandwich from whoever bought it. So a mechanic buddy bought it so he could learn how to tear it down and sleeve it. He also did his own body job while apprenticing. He loved it because he got it for next to nothing from me and it was cheap on gas.

To me that car was the start of the long downward spiral of GM.

Earl, with all due respect to you brother. You are being way too dramatic here in this regard. I loved my Vega and it was real good to me  except for the oil burning and it was solid as a rock when i sold it. My heart goes out to folks that were not as lucky as me but I LOVED  MY VEGA. Cheers. George

By the way to anyone that cares, the only reason i sold my 74 Vega Hatchback is that i was offered more than i actually paid for it. This guy was going to build a pro street Vega Hatchback and he wanted a SOLID example of the car and my Vega was as solid as they could come. Another factor of course was the oil burning and that was driving  me nuts, especially being a very young dude with little money at the time (late 1970's). Love them................hate them. It is all good in the greater good of the universe. Cheers. George

My Vega was solid also when I got rid of it ... too bad everything mechanical on it imploded.
