VIN help decoding

Hi, looking at a couple cars.

FIRST has paperwork claiming "66 ss nova 6 cylinder car" BUT VIN starts 611737???? What the hell is a VIN that starts with 6??

SECOND is a 115737 Which I understand is Chevy,

Any help would be great.

Thanks,

That is correct. A Canadian 66 Nova SS would be a 6 for 1966, 117 or 118 for 6 cyl SS or 8 cyl SS, then 37 for 2 dr ht, then O or 0 (depending who you ask), then the 5 sequential VIN digits for production number.

The second one will be a 67, where the 6th digit is the year, I am guessing. However, I am guessing the second VIN you posted has a mistake, it's likely a 115377, 115 being a 6 cyl, 37 2 dr ht, 7 for 1967.

Canadian and US serial numbers follow different formats.
Canadian format has the year as the first digit and US format has the year as 6th digit. So what Carl is suggesting is that 1 is Canadian, 1 is American.

No, actually for 67 the Canadian cars moved the year over to the 6th position in the VIN. Depending on the digit after the 115377, this could be a US or Canadian car from what I know and have seen.

Not much to say, 67 Nova V8 2 door hardtop, Canadian car, #5090 production. That's about all the VIN says.
