The young folks in the parts dept don't know shitte

The 96-98 Chevy trucks use a mini starter   can't imagine why they can't find him a starter

I often look up the parts and take the numbers in     I have 6 used mini starters on the shelf and several almost new

The only thing I haven't seen mentioned in this thread (unless I missed it) is to make sure you have the correct size ring gear to match the starter you are buying. With Chevies it's as simple as the large ring gear or the small one.

153 is the small one, 168 is the big one.

If I had to guess I'd say the crate 350 comes with the small one, but I may be thinking of the LT1 crate engine.

Guess I'll phone them this week and make sure I get both ring gear sizes, do you need a compression gun to get these on and off? What about shimming these?, needed or not? Starting to look like an OEM replacement just cause this needs to work and I'm doing this in a crappy location, ie no concrete but lots of mud.Needs to be moved now but I really want to install an aftermarket high torque so it's done as I'll just have to redo it again, although in a better spot.

Are you sure your original starter is no good??

I've probably repaired a hundred just taking them apart and cleaning contacts etc.

Thanks
Randy

Well here is the offender and it's a Powermaster 9200, looks a bit zorched, will get the exact one to replace it as I can't mess with it here and it must work now.Plenty mud and I was a bit nervous under the car but had some big stumps under the frame rails. Will rip it apart and see whats inside, then maybe just replace the solenoid for now.

Seems the solenoid is toast, clutch engages but motor does not start, separate motor test shows motor turns fine. Now it seems this solenoid is not sold in Canada, Summit has it for $19 but I have no time to wait for shipping at this point, best price for this starter came from Mopac in Langley.

Replaced the starter and all is good, U-Hauled it to Mission , starts much better than the old PowerMaster, just fires right up.
