My original-owner '69 2+2 427/390 four-speed


Well, original owner in the sense my Dad bought it new, but he's long since passed away.  I got the car in '84 and have had it since.  This car was NOT born with this powertrain and is not one of the original 12 cars.  It's only special to me since it was my Dad's first new car, our family car my entire childhood, and then my car for the last 30+ years!

It was restored at Musclecar Restorations and they have a few photos, but otherwise I see there aren't actually any decent photos up here, so I thought I'd post a couple.  

As you can tell I've taken a few liberties - Bonneville rally gauges, Grand Parisienne grille, and so on.  I've corrected a few things since these photos were taken, like getting the correct no-thermac single-snorkel air cleaner, and so on.

The last thing I need is a "by Pontiac" emblem for the trunk, but have never found a good one.  If anyone has a line on one, let me know!  This car has what I think are the last set of factory NOS 427 emblems that I sat on for decades!  I also collected NOS parts for about 10 years before the restoration.  Some parts like the marker lights and louvers are a tough find!

I'm currently installing new springs (and brakes) which should reduce the amount of "rake" the car has.  It runs 12.9 in the quarter at the track, which isn't too bad since they were 16.5 stock (or at least the Imapala 427 SS was).

I don't think it's ever been featured.  Never anywhere, actually.  I'm fine with it being run so long as my last name isn't used, if that's OK.

Here's a picture of my Dad and I changing plates in 1970, and then me and my kids changing plates many, many years later.  As a family we try to do it every year going back to when I was little.  Note the plate number has stayed the same.

This pic is 5 years old, so it's now safe to say "The crazy looking kid on the far right is now totally normal looking", he just could never post for pictures  And I've lost 30 pounds.

I can't speak for Todd who does all that but I would be willing to bet he would respect that request.

Replacing both front and rear springs, or just the front?  When I put the 454 in my 70 2+2 convertible it really dropped the nose, so I replaced the front springs the following year which brought the nose up again.   I also put new springs in my 70 Parisienne with the 454 when I replaced the chassis, it sits nice.  Let me know if you need the Moog spring #'s.

Anyone notice what I did for the shift indicator since it's a four-speed car? At the time I couldn't find any confirmed original stick cars, so I asked MCR to just make something, and it's backlit and everything. Apparently the factory ones are just blacked out. I like this better!

They also made the heater control insert from scratch, getting it laser cut somewhere (as it too is backlit if you recall).  That turned out really nice, and they're impossible to find in decent condition.  Haven't seen a good original since the 70s!

In 1970, and I presume the 1969's, the tilt column cars have a blanked out shift indicator.  On my 70 454 4 speed car I used Krylon Fusion black on the plastic lens.  It fits right in as the 1970 gauge background is black.

It wasn't until we were bleeding the brakes that my buddy pointed out I hadn't addressed the shift indicator.  I'd already installed the clock, heater & radio delete plates, but totally missed the shift indicator.   Out came the whole surround as I couldn't get the shift indicator out without removing the whole cluster.

I think I can add a couple more:  You'll see the incorrect tail lights to match the incorrect grille!  All personal choices... some historical.  But the car is historic to the family, not to Pontiac, if that makes sense.  In fact this car was built light blue and painted during dealer prep, so it was black for one month and blue for 45 years.  It's had an odd life, but cars that get used do!

Maybe someone can advise me on the valve cover decal I appear to be missing on the back passenger side valve cover.  

Also keep in mind it's not so high in the rear end, that was an incorrect spring that I've since replaced.

Curious. The burled wood applique on the steering wheel and dash filler is that what the 2+2 had or is it liberty on the original wood grain?
