You can't replace just a pinion. They are a matched set, you MUST change both gears as a matched set. If you change only one of the two gears, you will know right away by the noise that they are not matched.

I suspect you will have to buy used.

We think alike!

But don't do it, you WILL regret it. By accident, I tried this years ago when I was helping a relative with his 67 Chevelle. We didn't realize the two gears (used) were not from the diff and we fought with them for over a day trying to get them quiet. We found out they were not matched and abandoned that plan real fast!

Before you commit to parts for an 8.2, make certain that it is in fact an 8.2 and not one of those strange 8.75" 10-bolt rears. U.S. Pontiacs sometimes used those 8.75 rears and they were later used in the mid-to-late 1970s on big engine full-size GM cars, full-size wagons, A-body wagons 73-77 and also Cutlasses. The cover has 10-bolts, sort of squared off top & bottom, plus some little cresent cutouts by the axle tubes.

I'm not an expert, but I am simply advising you to verify which exactdifferential you have. Good luck!

I have a posi diff just like that one in the picture, but is a 8.875 that came out of a 68 Bonneville station wagon that had a 428 in it, 10 bolt cover but 12 bolt guts

Hey crazy ......that is exactly what i have in mine ,  a ten bolt cover squared off top and bottom and a ring gear with 12 bolts on it . What ring and pinion ratio did your locker have on it ? what sort of condition is it in ? how much do you want for it and where are you ? thanks j

Just double checked mine .....im a conduit of false information ....mine is just the same as in this picture , but my ring gear has 12 bolts and looks like it could measure 8.85 or 8.75 ...

Yes, the full size US built Pontiacs used an 8.875 ring gear. Fabcraft Metalworks has gears for these. The gears/carriers are P8 Pontiac only (well the Oldsmobile "P" axle is the same) 65-70 but 71-76 will work if you use the corresponding pinion yoke.

I was hoping someone south of the border who knows about these 'different' Pontiacs would chime in on this one!

I'm kidding Brad, I know you guys think our's are 'different'.....

There are a lot of times that it would be much easier to own a Canadian Poncho and the Rear diff is certainly one of them!!
