Pumpkin swap, what to do?


Hey guys,

My rear has been leaking at the pinion and howling for a few summers now, so its ready to be replaced.   I picked up a 3.08 posi in a 10 bolt housing, fully rebuilt, never ran.  Turns out it was originally from a 62 nova, so internal are not as stout as a fullsize, but theoretically will bolt right in.  Anyway, looking for advice.  I'm only running a stockish 283, so I'm not worried about overpowering it.

So my options are:

1)  Use it as is

2) Use it, but safeguard with Aubrey Bruneau style girdle caps

3) Sell to a Nova or Acadian enthusiast

I don't think a "NOVA" pumpkin will fit your full size rear end?? Axle dia.& splines & length will likely be different?? I may be wrong but as I remember the Nova is a much smaller rear end.

Doesn't the full size Chev/Pontiac pumpkin remove from the front of the rear axle housing in a '63 ? The Nova has the housing cover on the rear and as dualquadpete has said I don't think any of it will interchange. I would sell it and go to your local automotive supply and check out a new Motive Gear (Richmond) replacement Unit, you can get it with all the install pieces as well as the ring and pinion. I changed out a 3:08 last year to a 3:73 using the Motive replacement unit and install kit, no regrets!I looked up part numbers in my Motive Catalogue and used 1963 Chevrolet BEL AIR as a base,                                 Ring & Pinion -3:08 G884308,  3:55 G884355,  3:70 G884370,  Install Kit  GM 8.41K

ahh forgot about the axel diameter and spline count. Need to check with some spare axles I have kicking around. Hoping its compatible because I'm pretty sure they didn't make rally II's in four bolt!

As for interchange, it will physically fit in the following chevs, and I assume canadian equivalents.

Bel Air: 1955 - 1964 (Rear)
Biscayne: 1958 - 1964 (Rear)
Corvette: 1956 - 1962 (Rear)
El Camino: 1959 - 1964 (Rear)
Impala: 1957 - 1964 (Rear)
Nomad: 1955 - 1962 (Rear)
Nova: 1962 - 1964 (Rear)

He says and I'd bet on Tom:

Hey Tom- two questions. 1st- I just removed the 3.08 3rd member from my '58 axle. When looking at it from the front, there is a raised ring around the entire perimeter around 1/8" wide and it encompasses the 10 bolt holes. From the inside, it looks like a '55/'56 differential because it lacks the carrier side bearing support reinforced webbing. I think the casting # is 3790614. What is this?

Also, what rear end lube do you recommend using with an Eaton posi rear? Regular hypoid axle lubricant? Regular hypoid axle lubricant with an additive? Is there a special posi rear lube?



What you got son, is a 62-63 ChevyII rearend! You DO NOT want this!
I never discuss the 62-63 ChevyII rears because they are lighter and weaker than a 55-56 rear. Yes, as you have seen, the 62-63 ChevyII center section interchanges into any 55-64 housing. And that's where it all ends!!! NOTHING, NOTHING, NOTHING, is interchangeable between the ChevyII ane 55-64 center sections. The ring gear carrier, ring & pinion, bearings, yoke, seal, etc, are all different. Also, the 57-64 posi or the Eaton posi units WILL NOT FIT!!!
Somehow, someway, at some time in the past, someone stuck one of these ChevyII rears in your 58.
You need to start a search for some other 57-64 center section.
Sorry, that's not what you wanted to know--------------------b ut you asked.

Use a good 80w90 gear lube, PLUS, one bottle of GM posi additive for an Eaton posi unit.
