Were those Isuzu motors when new? Never new that, did know they were a tad slow, a bit faster than a 2 stroke Trablinka.

Ha ha! The first thing I thought when I read the thread title was "that must be the slowest car ever made". Never drove one but the regular gas Chevettes were slow enough as is. Given what 1980s diesel cars were typically like, I'm betting an electric wheelchair could beat one in the quarter mile.
Interesting relic, but will always be one of those 'neat cars that I never want to own'...
I raced my aunt gas chevette when i was a kid and won.....but I was "driving" a remote control truck!!!!!!!!!!!!! I still bug her about it to this day!
Man, GM really was pushing diesels around that time. Diesel Monte Carlo & Grand Prix, V6 diesel for the Chevrolet Celebrity & Olds Cutlass Ciera. Back when that car was available new there was a real push for slow and steady cars, super low numerical axle ratios and gutless engines. I was just looking at a 1983 Parisienne brochure and was surprised to see the engine choices were either a 229 Chevrolet V6 (this is a big full frame car) or the Oldsmobile 350 diesel. That was it! The big Mustang V8 in 1980/81 was a gutless 255 & the best you could do was a 301 in a Trans Am. In California the big engine in a Corvette was a smogged 305. The old 283 fuellies of 57-61 by contrast could really move in a solid axle Corvette. Then there was the Iron Duke L4 Camaro & Firebird of 1982-86. They say it is darkest before the dawn. Enter the 5.0 Mustang GT, the reborn Buick turbo V6 (79 to early 80s ones were problematic and frankly slow), the Firebird Formula 350. Then Shelby came along and created the pocket rocket Omni GLH.

that era was about the darkest years in the auto industry , the lowest hp small ( to small V8 s ) , the begining of front Wheel drive american car ( circa 1979 ) and horrible looking body designs like the tempo and the phoenix and the so remebered K car .........i m happy that era is gone

I remember when I worked at a Chevy dealership in the 80's the problems we had with those "electronic carburetors". What a nightmare. I remember almost puking when the Lumina came out. That dash! Ugh!
