63-64 steering column

I can't figure out the top end of the floor shift steering column, the second outside piece from the top, what keeps that from turning on a floor shift car? Anyone got some pics from the assembly manual? This is the piece that has the shifter attached on a column shift car.

Its for the 63, but I assume the 64 is the same.

Thanks,

Don

the 64 beaumonts use two screws to attach the signal ring to the tapered column ring from the under side of the tapered column ring.. the column shaft has a slot in it that fits into a tooth on the underside of the dash that keeps it from rotating, clamp to dash. I hope this helps

409 safari, those pages are for a 64, found out some things are different between 63 and 64. But, if you look at the drawing for the powerglide and 3 speed, there is a tube part inside the #3 part in each. Its not numbered but it shows a piece of tube with a slot on the side. But that tube is not there for the 4 speed. Maybe its just a friction fit?

I think I figured it out, the above pics were a big help.

The pic below shows the Chevy 4 speed part on the left and the Pontiac powerglide part on the right, you can see on the inside and outside they are identical, just no mount for the shifter or hole for it in the 4 speed part.

That pipe sitting on the left part fits into the 4 speed part (on top, right where it is touching) and then the top part with the plastic signal light and horn piece fits on top of the pipe. The bottom of the 4 speed part slides on top on a pipe inside the steering column. As far as I can tell, it is just friction from the 2 pipes that keeps the 4 speed part from moving, I'll find out once I get it back together completely.

On both these parts, you can see a rectangular groove on the left. On the column shifts, the pipe inside the steering column is longer and it has a rectangle on it that this part slides on over. I saw they were shorter and I wondered if I had lost a part from the 4 speed column. There is also a problem with the reproduction plastic signal light part that was confusing me.

Never throw old parts out, until you have the new part working. If you look at the pics of the 2 plastic pieces, you will see a ridge of plastic on the new part that is not on the old part. Both the Pontiac and Chev old parts did not have that ridge. The ridge will not allow the plastic piece to slide on over the pipe on the 4 speed shifter part.

That top metal piece which fits next to the steering wheel, it was stamped with the same GM part number on the 4 speed Chev column and on the Pontiac Powerglide column. The only difference in the 2 was the PG piece had screw holes to mount the PRNDL, plus it had a hole and mounting hole for the light.

I think we say the same thing in different words, at least we understand each others...LOL....

...of course, the transmission control lever housing (#12 in 1965-66 steering column graphic) on a 4 speed don't need to turn....

....the #7 on 1963-64 standard shift and #7 on Powerglide turn with the shifter handles....

....the ''piece of tube with the slot'' keep the #3 (directional signal lamp switch housing) from turning...

....but we still don't know how the transmission control lever (w/out lever) on a floor shift is fix to the mast jacket!!! By some screws, I supposed...

It's remind me a story about a steering column on a '72 Cutlass convertible I owned is 1980....will keep it for an another time...
