Molding pins

Anyone know what to do when the pins have broken off on these cast body moldings? I have 3 that are missing on 1 molding.

Cheers

If there's a large enough flat area use 2 sided emblem tape. What emblems are you asking about?

I've used 3M molding tape with great success......Canadian Tire,NAPA...comes in different widths and lengths.Stays put in cold temps.

Dry fit it first and put a piece of masking tape to outline 2 sides of emblem. Once that stuff sticks it's hard to remove!

I should have been more clear. Its the long chrome molding that goes along the rocker from quarter panel to fender and weighs about 18000 lbs...lol...Im sure I could get someone to machine new pins but that just sounds pricey.

I thought that is what you meant, that's why I asked. There is NO way 3M tape would hold those Custom Sport, pot metal suckers on!

More questions:biggrin

Are the pins snapped off clean at their base (at the molding) or have they rusted away? I might have a solution for you.

Are the special clips intact inside the rectangular holes (in the car body panel) or missing/rusted away? They are what the molding "pins" snap into. ... they are crucial.

Thanks Darryl

3 of them have snapped clean off at the base. I need to look to see if the clips are still there but I have a feeling they are long gone. I havn't had time to even see if I need to buy that boot from you! Hopefully tonight.

That's a good thing. New pins (unless you find your pins are still stuck in the body clips) can be Cold Weld epoxied on. I might be able to help you with a few pins, I will check on the weekend.

The bad thing is if you haven't got those body clips ... they are impossible to find ... trust me. Yes, check for those clips (even inside the panel if you can ... they get pushed through).

Well lets start with the good news.... 1 of the pins is still stuck in the clip which means im only missing 2 pins. The bad news im missing 1 clip and its right in the rocker....no way to get inside to get it out, if its still in there.

I may have some clips. Darryl and I had a discussion on these clips a few years ago when I salvaged some trim off a car at Pick n Pull here. I know I just saw some clips a couple weeks ago but not sure if they are the correct ones or not.

Just have a couple that resemble those, the ones I had in mind are different and I think for a clip on moulding.  Will try a couple pictures here.

Those look like they'd work, depending on their size.

Make the pins out of rivets. File in the recessed notch on a drill press.

Stud Welding......form a stud in the same shape and diameter as the original.

Here's a company in Edmonton that might help you out, or at least give you more information regarding cost and procedure.

The pins are about a 1/4 inch in diameter.

If I'm understanding this right the pins on a 64 full size are part of the moulding.
Here's how a 64 Beaumont is put together.

Clips such as those in the top row ( originals ) are inserted into rectangular holes in the door skin. The clips on the right are almost the same, just not quite as big in the wide direction. The clips on the left are just a tad longer but again not quite as wide. Believe that either of these could be used ( I intend to  try ). I've seen posts on here that seem to indicate that these clips are found somewhere on a 66 dash. I've bought them at various flea markets. Should have spares if I ever get that far.

For the pins I had a few good ones and had to make others. In the pic every second pin is an original and the homemade ones are in between.

The pins slide into a groove in the trim.

Last pic is of an original pin, a new pin and the rivet I used to make the new pins. My replacements were all made by hand with a manual filing so not quite as exacting as I'd like but believe they will work. If I was to make more I'd likely make a jig, mount the pins in the drill press and go from there. Oh, and you have to shave the head of the rivet as they are slightly thicker.

The rivets I used are Spae-Naur RVT-128 1/4" x 1 1/2". Bought a box of 100 so have plenty if someone is needing them as blanks.

Hope this helps.

That looks like to should work real well Ted. Now that I see your clips I think a couple of the ones I have are for a Beaumont. Think I have another package of them for another set of mouldings I have but I put them in a spot where I would never loose them. My thoughts were if I was to do re do my car would be to use stainless bolts that size and file the heads down to fit in the moulding slot and then just drill holes in the door for the bolts. On the inside of the door I would just run a 2" or so strip of aluminum the width of the door which could serve like a washer for the nuts. I am not 100% happy with how tight the pins hold the moulding into the door. Obviously not a stock look but I think may give a better finished product in my case.

Yes, one at each end of the dash to hold the dash pad on. The pad pushes forward (horizontally) and there is a pin that looks very much like that on the back of the dash pad.

Great job Ted!thumbsup.gifthumbsup.gif

I'll buy some of those rivets off of you (and pay for shipping). I still can't find my bag of pins.

I found there are (2) lengths of pins needed on the '64 Parisienne Custom Sport lower trim. Longer pins are needed on the biggest piece of rocker trim (like Darcy's), and shorter pins are needed for the other (3) smaller pieces. I should take some pictures and post them.
