64 4 jet Rochester a/c carb idle up?

So not sure if it's okay to post this here as this is actually my Impala I am wondering about... It's a four seasons climate control car...(factory in dash air) I want to get the air working again as it as a stupid small leak.  However I have been procrastinating because I don't know how the car is supposed to change its idle to support the compressor being on.  Now the original carb was swapped out for an edlebrock before I purchased it and I have since put a 4gc on the I purchased from a member here off a 64 custom sport 327

anyone know?

Thanks

Did you check the shop manual? I find the shop manual RPM's are much lower than what works on today's fuel, my cars have only idled good at 6-700 whereas the manual says say 450. My cars have all been manuals, I assume you have a powerglide? If what is in the shop manual doesn't work, I'd set the idle high at say 700-800, then adjust back from there to a point where it is "comfortable" when you shift into drive with the ac on?

I have looked in the manuals and not certain. I seem to have to set mine to 750 ish but if I do this with air on it races and bangs into gear with the air off.

I should have a closer look on the car to see if it has the cable but for some reason I don't think it does. I wonder if I can get the Cadillac one to attach to my car?

Shouldn't be too difficult to fab up an electric one but hopefully the cable parts are still there.

Very interesting!!

Thanks
Randy

If you are not concerned about it being correct for your 64, see if you can find one from a later Q-Jet. Some of them have a threaded plunger so you can easily adjust it to kick up the idle to exactly the speed you want with the A/C on.

If you want to do that, I can check, I may even have one around that you can have for shipping costs.

I am interested into looking at this as an option.   I am on my way out to look and take some photos.   American car with a black firewall so very hard to see anything back there.

Ok so took a bunch of really crappy photos and still got nothing. But either way there is no evidence whatsoever that my Impala had this cable setup. It clearly has the hole in the accelerator arm to have the component for the cable clamp but again no evidence that anything was ever attached.

I just dug one out from a Q-Jet and it tests fine. It has 1/4" of travel from compressed to extended. If you decide you would like it, just PM me your mailing address and it's on the way. It has a mounting bracket that attaches to the side of a later model carb than what you have but at least that would give you a starting point for mounting.

I'd suggest you go to ChevyTalk and ask this question in the 61-64 forum, lots of 64 stock AC people there.

I'd say that your car never came with the cable if you see no evidence of it but you may be able to use one. Have you dropped your rpm down to where it will idle in park with the ac on and still be OK without ac? I found the 4gc's are not a great carb, you get them working fine then they don't work fine the next day.
