1950 Pontiac 239 6 cylinder Motor Mounts

In the tear down of our 1950 Pontiac project I noticed both side motor mounts were severed or the rubber had left go of the metal flat bar, in any respect it was torn apart.  The hardend rubber remains did appear to have a twist in it's shape.   My second observation was the radiator hose inlet had been repaired, poorly I must say, but this could be as a result of frustration and not dealing or solving the root problem which I believe is motor swinging and twisting the hardend radiator hose which in turn broke the radiator inlet, just an assumption at this point.   I have been in conversation regarding this problem with some people and they seem to think it is possible.

What are your thoughts?

Vibration will do that over the years. A radiator repair shop will tidy that up, bit of black paint it will look as good as new. Its not uncommon to see broken engine mounts on a car of that age. They are probably the original mounts.

OK thanks for your comments, Vibration is definitely a culprit for sure, so then changing the radiator inlet hose is on the hit list of replacement parts anyway. I could not believe on how the front of this car was constructed so solid with a rad support bracket mounted on rubber of a sort but air inlet shrouds that are bolted to the rad support are not and neither are inside fender wells nor the fenders, So I agree that vibrations is a definite problem to resolve on the build.

Thanks very good point.

When I took the body off my 50 Chev and Puddle Jumper I replaced the old fabric body and radiator mounts with rubber. Got them cut locally for about $30.00.

Dale:
The rear motor mounts on Cdn. models with std. transmission are usually different than US ones.
They used the carryovers from Chevrolet.

This supplier has a lot of good chassis and misc.(Chev.) parts that fit our cars.

Hey Murray

Thanks for the link, the 239 is such a tall engine, and really can produce a fair amount of low end torque 178 ft pds @ 1200 rpm, so there is quite a bit a strain these side mounts.

Thanks
