power glide to 200r4 swap


Hey guys I'm thinking of swapping the existing 2 speed power glide with a 200r4 new tranny has 27 splines and òverdrive I'm thinking better mileage? Coupling to a 1968 327@375hp everything is going in my 64 4 door no post Parisienne thoughts?

I have done the 700r4 swapnin my convertible and the wagon also. I have not driven the wagon as of yet but the convertible is great on fuel considering. It loafs along the highway. The 200 is lighter and should fit in a little better. The floor shifter was a little bit of dickering to do without destroying things. I wanted to do it without changing things to not let us return to the original power glide if ever wanted to do so. The wagon being column shift was super easy to do slight mod under the car with the piece that connects to the transmission and a slight bend to the shifter rod and all is good to go. I purchasted a lockup kit for them both. Be sure to make sure you add a newer brake light switch from a 86 Caprice with cruise control or something similar that has a second set of terminals so that you can make sure you wire it up to unlock the converter when you hit the brakes. This is a big deal in a panic stop situation so you don't stalk the engine. Also make for much nicer driving from what I have noticed as we forgot to add it when we first hooked up the convertible

Excellent information thanks for that.  I have been reading the 700r4 is more robust but i am not sure if that will be an issue.  I really just want a nice highway gear as the powerglide is killing me on the highway I think im around 400rpm doing 100km/hr or so

I've put a 200R4 in both a 64 Impala and a 67 Chevelle.
It was a bit of work on the 64 because of the X frame but it's actually a pretty easy swap on any car that was available with a TH400.
If I remember correctly, the transmission mount is in about the same place as a TH400 so you should be able to slide your crossmember back to the next set of holes in the frame.
I had to get a different yoke for the driveshaft of the 64 but I'm not sure about the 67 Chevelle.
The 200R4 is almost the same length as a Powerglide though so I didn't have to shorten the driveshaft.
I was able to find aftermarket shift indicators that fit the factory shifters.

They did use the 200R4 in the Buick Grand Nationals so they're not all that weak, but there are aftermarket builders that can make them handle all kinds of power.

The 200R4 I put in the Chevelle was out of a Monte Carlo SS and it's shift points were just right, but the one I put in the Impala was out of something with a mild V6 and it tended to shift too soon. I had to get a kit to change the shift governor for that one.

I did those swaps about 20 years ago so I don't remember the details but I can say that in both cases the cars were much nicer with the overdrive transmission. The acceleration was also much better with the lower first gear.

I'm sure there's all kinds of detailed info available on the internet these days. It's a bit of work but it's definitely worth the effort.

Nice! I just got a 200R4 for my 60wagon and was gonna post the question if anyone knows what needs to be done. Still have to find where the wires go though.
