McKinnon Studebakers Trivia

I was reading the Studebaker club magazine (Turning Wheels) and found out that '65 & '66 Studebakers (the last ones/years built in Hamilton) used Chevy 230s & 283s built at McKinnon in St. Catherines ON.

About the 283s: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/studebaker-thunderbolt-283.579785/

Yes it is true. Ironically the 65 & 66 Studebaker brochures show the old Studebaker engines, yet the 65 & 66 models used St. Catherines built Chevrolet sixes & 283s. The 194 was standard, the Skybolt 230 six was optional, plus the 283 2-barrel. That was good enough for the majority of buyers. They replaced the Studebaker 170 inline six plus the 259 & 289 Studebaker V8s.

I had a 65 Daytona parts car that was a 283/ Borg warner automatic car. It had a Dana 44 with twin traction and transistorized ignition. Would have been a cool car if it weren't so rotten.

Here's a 283 in another Studebaker:

70 years old is the new 30 Bernie!

That is nice. Nice rich colours. Funny about the mufflers though.

I'm a step-down Hudson Hornet fan also (1st. one was made in '51). They are cool looking ... so low profile.

You never know. I'll keep an eye on it. A friend of mine (who is also a huge Stude fan) was visiting that area of Nova Scotia this past summer and stumbled upon this car. He told me it was worth the asking price. Makes me wish I had of kept the huge stash of NOS parts I had when I had my Studebakers!

I don't know Carl.... There is something to be said for a nice 1966 sliding roof wagon with with a zippy 350 (in place of the 283-but looking stock). It would unique, Canadian and fast.

The Studebakers above in Grimsby look like 1964 & 65 models.

That same location today:

Check out the wheels ^. They are Motor Wheel Spiders circa 1972. Where have I seen them on a Studebaker before? Why, back in 2004 on a 66 for sale in Ontario:

I have a feeling that Stude you posted Cameron also belonged to the same guy who has the wagon for sale. Could very well be the same set of wheels.

RE: McKinnon Studebakers Trivia - Racing Studebakers in Thunder Bay

All this talk of the last years of studebakers took me back to growing up in Thunder Bay in the lake 1960s and watching the late model stock car races at the local race track - I remembered there were the typical 55-57 chevs in the field but i do also remember there being a fair number of late model Studebakers in the field

Any i googled Studebakers racing in Thunder bay and here is what i found

http://thehamiltonchaptersdc.ca/Studebakers%20Racing%20at%20Riverview%20Speedway%20in%20Thunder%20Bay%20Ontario%20in%20the.pdf

hopefully the link works

Yup, the link works. In the link that red stude with black & white diagonal stripes looks like it borrowed the paint scheme from Barrie Poole, Sandy Elliot & the Border Bandits racing team (from Chatham, Ontario!)
