The number one undisputed King of Muscle cars from the (past). Your opinion.

What is the undisputed king of the muscle cars from the past, please none of the newer recent stuff. Obviously this will be narrowed down to the late sixties to very early seventies. My choice is as simple as 1+1 and with out any doubt or hesitation it has to be the 1970 CHEVELLE SS 454 LS 6. With that special engine and the usual four gear and rear gear setup this car was king. Even the HEMI in 1970 was little match for this combo. Most car magazine's in late 1969 and into 1970 tested this LS 6 combo up against the 70 HEMI and the LS 6 was always on top. What is your choice ? Cheers. George

That would be my first pick. I sold cars for a few months for Fowlie Motors in Calgary just when the 1970s were introduced but I never took one for a spin.

We did have a used 1969 Camaro with the 427 engine that I spent a few hours with. It was yellow with yellow hounds tooth upholstery. One of the ugliest cars on the lot but boy did it make a lot of horse power.

x2     That was my choice too . I let one get away when it  was somewhat affordable in the early 80's.  I just came across it at a local show this summer (over 30 years later ). i thought it went south never to be seen again . The person that bought it back was and is ,still local , and is now selling it ( $150 K) . He was a little shocked that I remembered the car from 30 years ago and knew some of the history .

The list of muscle cars is long and covers the full spectrum of capable straight line cars.

My choice would be the 1969 Chevrolet Yenko Nova 427.

Yenko models include Chevelle and Camaro but the Nova is recognized by many as the most lethal of all Yenkos.

1 66 427 Cobra

2 67 L88 Corvette

3 64 Fairlane t-Bolt

4 any Hemi Cuda

5  70 Buick Stage 1 (highest torque output of

any show room bought muscle car including the Hemi)

Agree w/Carl about the 66/67 L79 Nova but it is not in the class above - imho

66 GTO for me. 389 tri power, 4 speed. The GTO was the King only because it's widely recognized as being the "first" mainstream muscle car. It wasn't the fastest ever, but it was always fast. A lot of the cars being mentioned so far are super cool, and quite fast, and most are what I call "unicorns". So rare as to be almost impossible to find anymore, or afford, and too rare to drive. The GTO had some healthy production numbers, and while not 'cheap' I think they're still a very attainable car.

I would have to say that the 454 SS, the Hemi Roadrunner/ GTX/ RT/Super bee etc. and the Buick GSX would all have a chance for top dog depending on the driver, the mechanic who did the tune and the weather conditions . They were all scary fast.

I have an old magazine around here somewhere from  1970, I believe, with an article about a shoot-out between the hemi GTX and the 455 Buick. Out of three runs, the Buick took two.

Small block 327s and such are great power makers but, Mouse motors just don't run with Rats and Elephants. I've had several 327s, in all states of tune from stock to built to kill so I  do have some experience on them. I did , however, test drive a 1969 Camaro Z-28 in 1969. It too was as Coop described, yellow/ black hood and trunk panels and ugly houndstooth interior. It also was equiped with the 302 engine with a close ratio Muncie and a 4.11 posi rear diff. Not saying what it would have done against the big boys but It sure as the devil would have cleaned the clock of any stock 327 of any build and it would outhandle all of them on a crooked road. By the way, if memory is not too foggy, I believe it was red lined somewhere over 7000 rpm!

Just one guy's opinion biggrin

Fred

I had a 70 SS396 Chevelle. I bought a LS6 short block from GM, slapped on some square port heads with a 1050 Holley 3 barrel.......It was fast but never did get it running right....Also had an L78 396 in that car.......it would really rev.

I like the 70 LS6 as well, there is one I see once in a while at car shows her. All original including paint and all the paperwork to go with it. I do think a 67 Beaumont or Chevelle for that matter, is a better looking car and a 427 is "sexier" than a 454.

There are also too many muscle cars to list I would own if money was no object. And then you could argue over stock or tuned up outside the factory like a Yenko. I'd take any mentioned above.

For looks, a red split window coupe is hard to beat.

Much as I love the Chevys, the undisputed muscle car THAT YOU COULD BUY FROM THE FACTORY is the 1968 Barracuda with the 426 RACE hemi. They had to make a special class for it in stock car drag racing because nothing else could touch it.

Great cars guys all of them. I bought a new 69 coupe 435hp 427 in 69. The fiberglass 70 series red lines were dangerous, but those side pipes where music. Had the car 3 months when an 18 wheeler ran a red light and took me out. Went to a 442 Cutlass and I still have them today, my 4spd convertible suits me to a "T". Love the 442 cars.

I raced on the street a lot in the old days. And this was for money, not just bragging rights.

My buddy had a 66 Chevelle with a 3.73 posi rear end, close ratio 4 speed, and no power brakes or steering and the 360 HP 396. He was the undisputed king of the hill. We raced every model of car out there and no other muscle car beat him. This included all 383 and 426 engined Chrysler products, all Fords and every other GM model.

My Beaumont had the 325 HP 396. 3.07 non posi rear end and I ran in the middle of the pack.

The only thing that we lost to was an original 427 Cobra and the only one I ever saw. It was scary fast. We raced on 16th ave east bound from 19th street and he was gone before we got out of first gear.

I did have one interesting race against a 426 Hemi Challenger. I took him up to 110 MPH before he caught up. In a quarter mile it would have been a close race.

Anything that raced on the strip was in a different world.

Carl, a good friend has a 66 427 vette. It is now a light green metallic but at one time was painted that same bronze colour in your pics. His brother bought it in the late 60's, he's had it since the mid 70's, did a restoration on it in the 90's.
