hi gurus! mate has a BBC. Numbers tell us 396/427, corvette
Any secret way of telling whether a block is 396 or 427 without taking apart and measuring bore? Thanks!

Yes, I don't know of any casting number that is shared by both displacements. It should be unique for each size.
I didn't think so either but according to my Chevy V8 Casting Number book in 1966 they share number 3855961. I guess if you have that number then you have to use stamping numbers.

I see what you mean, I looked on mortec.com and it's there too.
It seems odd that you never hear talk of getting one of those in a 396 configuration and boring it out to a 427 if that's the case. And I have no doubt it is, GM sure should know and Mortec is normally bang on with their stuff too.

Bit frustrating! How do we tell from stamping numbers?
