1962 full size spedometer removal


Has anyone removed speedometer , have to take mine out to calibrate speedometer ( speed indication reads to high, distance spot on) also replace amp and fuel gage with after market temp and fuel. Have a spare, see there are 4 nuts to hod into dash trim and the lights and wireing, does column need to come out  or any thing else?  Laurie

Laurie, its been a while but if I recall its easier to just remove the steering wheel so its out of your road. No need to remove the column. Remove the dash pad and this will give you access to the screws securing the whole instrument panel. You will need to disconnect the speedometer cable. Not much room to do this and I modified pliers to break the nut free. You can try to disconnect it at the xmission and pull it through with the panel but the panel needs to be tllted at quite an angle to clear the framework. Its a bit of a fight.There are 3 plugs to disconnect and everything should come free. Also, if you have a factory radio, its easier to unscrew the nuts under the knobs and leave the radio behind as there is a securing bracket at the back of the radio. Thanks for photos Jim, thought it would come out bottom, this looks alot easier. Going to put Autometer gauges in place of Amp and Fuel gauges, temp in amp spot and matching fuel other spot. Laurie

image.jpegI installed my gauges where the original radio was. With the bezels they are about 2 1/4 in. In dia. There is just enough room. I am just wondering what size gauges you have as the amp and fuel gauges are pretty small along with the area they fit in. Are they digital?

Here are some photos of what I trying to do! Going to use gauges with black face,red pointer, white markings, and a black bezel Auto Meter Z series short sweep. As you see gauges mount to speedo face, will make a plate to cover hole in back to keep light in. The cold light will get a red lens and become a Alt. light, leaving the Hot light working as additional warning.  Laurie

Good job.

There is a Smith mechanical gauge available that has temp and oil pressure in the same gauge. I used one in my 62 Chev to replace the clock. I have one in my 63 hanging off the dash, but I could do what you did and maybe put it in the dash.

Its looking good. Great idea turning the cold light into an alternator light. Never could understand why you needed a light to tell you that your engine is cold.

Thanks again Jim, the dash came out as you said,will come out without removing steering wheel. Here are some pictures of speedometer now almost done! As you see I removed face of speedo.made hole at each end where old fuel and amp gauges were. New gauges mount to speedo face, using the old gauge back, creating a hole to match of gauge and reinstall it to add support to gauge, modified gauge clamp and the studs to hold gauge in(to long)should go in as it came out. cold light in now red for Alt.  Laurie          Added night time photo  LT
