Need bell housing identification......casting number/year made

I'm on the hunt for a bell housing for  a 1964 Chev/Pontiac...any information/charts  anywhere that gives the proper casting number

matching the year it was made for?

I figured I'd dig out the parts book.

Not sure if these are all casting numbers (which aren't always the same as part numbers) but here's the part numbers.

3858403 230 taxi or police (may have casting number 3840383 on it)

3785644 230 taxi or police (later in the year)

3858403 283 or 327

3899621 409

Although they will all bolt up to any of those engines, they are made for different clutch sizes.

Thanks Carl(s)....looks like what I'm looking for is 3858403,which would have a 10.5 inch clutch.

I plan to 4 speed my 63 that has power glide and from what I've been reading best stay away from the 1963 (one year only) bell housing.

Another question regarding the fly wheel...how do you know if you have a 153 tooth flywheel or a 168 tooth flywheel?

I think I will be able to figure that out for you in the parts book as well.

Back to you later tonight hopefully.

I was going to start digging and then it occurred to me---are you wanting to know if the original 63 flywheel is 153 or 168? Or a replacement flywheel you are getting that you plan to install when you do the conversion?

I am thinking he is asking if his car currently has a 153 or a 168 but I was hoping he would see this and confirm that. I assume he doesn't want to change starters so wants to stick with the same diameter.

All speculation of course...

You eastern dudes need to give us here in Calgary some time to get up in the morning....wink

....you're right Carl, wanted to know what my 283 presently has......is there an advantage to changing the flywheel  (and the starter ) to a 168 tooth?

Thanks for the list Pierre... I didn't think to look in the same parts book that I have.......doh!

From the list......what's FIRST JOBS- STAMPED 3840383/SUP 3858401 and AFTER JOBS - STAMPED 3779553 mean ?

look at the starter bolts....

10.5 flywheel will have starter bolts across from each other, in line

11 flywheel starter bolts will be diagonal

When I was at GM Parts meetings way back when, I was taught that first jobs were built prior to Jan 1st (i.e. on a 63 Pontiac, built before Jan 1 1963) and after jobs were built from Jan 1 to end of the production year. However, this is definitely NOT always true from what I've seen.

Should it not be an aluminum housing?

I know the 3840383, 3858403 and 3899621 are aluminum. Not sure about the 3785644 though.

What's the general preferred  flywheel and  the clutch size?

You'll get lots of varied opinions.

If you just drive it on the street, a 10.5" is fine.

If you want to drive it hard, put in an 11". If you go 11", as Dave mentioned the starter is different. And I don't think you can fit the 11" setup in anything but the 621 bellhousing, but once again, I could be wrong.

My two cents.

63 up were all 153 tooth closed bottom aluminum for a small block and the starter mounts to the block.

62 back were open bottom cast iron (except for some every rare aluminum ones for a 62 409, expensive) and 168 tooth and had a starter mount on the BH. I like the open bottom (can be handy for lots of reasons) and the BH starter mount, the starter and the flywheel align themselves, no need for shims. One of those cast iron ones would likely do the trick, but you'd need a new starter. Check the casting numbers and year on anything you buy, there are some truck ones with a bigger hole for the transmission input shaft.
