Speed Warning (pic)

I was looking through my parts cupboard for a regular old speedo face, which I never did find.  Extra lights?  You bet.  Speed warning? Sure.  Gauges?  We got 'em.  Plain base speedo?  Nope!

Here's the speed warning, in case you've never seen one!

Is that a 69 or 70? The face looks black in the photo.

Have always been a fan of speed warning.
Never been a fan of cruise control.

For up-optioning cars I'll hoard parts like the next guy.   But I would sell ANYTHING I had to someone who was restoring a car that came with it.  If you're restoring a car with Speed Warning on the GM doc sheet, it's yours.

Or even if it's a nice enough clone, I'd sell it... that's what I decided on the truck forums once I was done my GMC and had some rare NOS stuff left over that I'd accumulated.  I'm always happy to see it wind up on a nice vehicle, just not in someone else's parts cupboard!

Here is the basic cluster in service no less, albeit with some option goodies nearby.  It's a late production version that had a metal plate attached over the top cover of the cluster to prevent the warping problem that was happening, instead it caused them to crack when the metal plate expanded in the heat, D'oh!

Here is one with a gauge cluster option, temperature and an amp meter are on the left side, apart from the deformed aluminum molding you can see the top leading edge of the cluster deformed, this is the problem they tried to fix with that plate I mentioned in the pic of the basic cluster.  out of the frying pan into the fire.

last pic is of a cluster with gauges and speedwarning. warning lights and gauges were not offered optionally. Believe it or not there were other clusters offered including certified versions for police work and metric for European service (I'm not sure how many of the cluster options were offered on either of these metric or police certified units). The police version had much more hash marks to delineate the speed and was marked certified.

Does your speed warning have the courtesy lights (fuel, lights)? Mine does not. So there are three different speed warnings (gauges, lamp group, and base).

I would bet your gauge-speed-warning is the only one you'll ever see. One would have to imagine that a few NOS units were made for service and are out there though. That'd be a tasty find. I have two rally gauge setups (one's a 70 though) and neither has speed warning.

I was tempted to put a rally gauge package in this car as I did my coupe, because that gives you gauges without having to hide the 3-gauge set (oil, temp, volts) somewhere. But I'll keep it stock down to the idiot lights this time!

Some other Canada trivia: there are only 3 faces (RHD which I assume is metric 6458525, 6282835 with speed warning, 6482291 for all others).  I cannot see an entry for a face for the speed warning with lamp group.  No idea why.

There are only four speedometers available in Canada so far as I can tell:

Base Speed
Base Speedo plus lamp warning group
Speed Warning
Speed Warning with lamp warning group

And that's it for Canada, folks! Group 9.743 There's one comes up on eBay often with a different part number marked faintly with something about "KM" but it looks like a mile-based unit. Not sure what that is.
