The only 310 HP 455 from this era was listed as the SD455 in 1973 which never made it into any A body. By 1975 the 455 was 200 HP through those early catalytic converters and low compression ratios.

I have a kink in my neck from looking at those photos.

I think as we get older we all become Archies.

So in an effort to justify their Big Block status to the Pontiac engine I've heard some say that the 455 is a bored out 428 and a 428 was not the same as a 400 since it had larger main journals hence a 428 and 455 are Big Journal Blocks.

What does Archie say to this Bunk?

I'm no Archie but the way I see it the beloved small block 265/283/327 came in a small journal until 1968 and then changed to a large journal for the 327, 307, 350 etc and not to mention the 400. Yet there is no debate as a smaller small block vs small block vs a larger small block.

If there is any Pontiac that could be referred to as a small block but not really is the short deck height 301. Again the 366/427 tall deck blocks are still referred to as big blocks.

Long story short, in my opinion it is a Pontiac engine, no big or small block.... and we have true Canadian small and big block Pontiacs.

OK.....as I understand it......326,350,389 and 400.....ALL had 3" main journals .......421,428 and 455's had 3.25's.....

The 421's and 428's   are the most desireable....in stock form......because they were ALL high compression....and 7 litre....is really the "magic" number...same as Chevy and Ford...oops...almost forgot mopar 426.....

455,454,460 and 440....are more commonly found today.......because they made a whole lot more of them.....in low compression/smog configuration.....and are still out there....in motorhomes, trucks and barges...

That being said......A Pontiac...is still a Pontiac......and that's all the Pontiac guys call them.....It seems that NO name enhancement is needed....

For the record......301-455 Pontiac engines all share the same... water pump, valve covers, oil pan and motor mounts...(within series)....and 326-455....have the same deck height.

The 301 is definitely the "black sheep" of the family......and are generally considered non-rebuildable....as it cost less to re-build a 400 or 455......350 Pontiacs.....are ALMOST in the same boat...but are actually a good little motor..

 Edith......can you get me a beer...............smile
