When I moved to PEI I had a job waiting for me at a Hyundai dealership working as a service advisor. A customer came in looking for tires. I got her a quote for a Uniroyal All Season. She said "Is that a ground grip?". I had never heard that term in my life and not knowing what she meant I simply said "Yes, it has good grip". She bought the tires and when it was time to pay she again asked "Those are ground grips, right?". Finally I asked "What do you mean by "ground grip"?". She said "A snow tire!". Oops...

Its funny you guys should post this as my wife and i just spent 4 days in Victoria as a "winter" getaway. Didn't quite work out but still 0 degrees is pretty tolerable compared to the -20's we've had for a month. Still walking around in the Butchart garden in the snow wasn't what we quite expected. Kind of pretty though.
Saved our money to stay for once in our life at the Empress. Had a harbour front suite and I must say I could get used to that kind of service. The hor d'oeurves at 5 were great and if you snuck enough of them to your table it kind of negated the need for supper.
Great little stay and nobody threatened to beat the crap out of us because we were from Alberta. Nice folks.

Just for the record.....We DO have TONS of "novice" drivers here...on the south coast of BC...that may have never driven before......and add snow/ice into the equation.....with our roads that are not designed for the heavy traffic we see.....and trying to get anywhere....becomes a total "gong show"
You are far better off...just staying at home......while it's snowing....because.....it will usually be gone...off the roads in a day or so.
Victoria IS nice in the snow....and if you are staying on the Inner Harbour......A car is not needed.....Plenty of good things...to see and do......just walking..
My Vancouver daughter sent me pics of her backyard, one day was beautiful crocuses, the next day it looked like the Surrey pics. Our total snow this winter, knock on wood, was about 30 CM's. Probably 2-300MM's of rain, was +9C here yesterday. Bizarre winter across Canada.
