Maybe next winter, we'll see.

It's a bit of a stretch even getting the time for this. Life circumstances have really put a dent in my hobby time I'm afraid.

But I sure am having fun doing it!

And that hole is a simple fix should anyone ever want to make the car a 3 on the tree again. I'm bagging every little nut, bolt, bracket etc I remove and saving it all.

But I can't imagine anyone ever changing it back.

Hi Carl 

This maybe a stupid question, but here goes. Do you have the proper steering column to make it really look original?

It sure does look cool with it in place and the cut out looks beautiful and not fake.

Not sure if he does? But can always cut the nub off the collar and fill the hole. My 57 looks like a factory 5 spd.wink

Its fun to watch the progress Carl!

The Strato is looking a little different from when I saw it in fall.

I have some parts to return to you once I liberate the Grande in a month or so, so I hope you don't mind me stopping by for a coffee in spring!

As always, I learned something.

I have to convert my Muncie to a passenger side speedometer gear on the tailhousing. As you may have seen in another thread, 70_Acadian_SS stepped up and gave me a tail housing. Before I changed it I read up a bit and discovered that the speedometer drive gear on the Muncie shaft has to move back 1/2" for passenger side outlet vs. driver's side outlet.

Today I made a puller to do that.

Be aware that not all Muncies have a machined area on the shaft that permits pulling the gear back the 1/2". The one Muncie I planned to use does not have the area to allow pulling it back, but I had a spare and it does, so I will be good to go. I had no idea about doing all this, never heard of it before.

If anyone in the Winnipeg area ends up doing this, let me know and you can gladly use this puller. It's basic scrap metal and threaded rod but it's easier just to borrow this than to make one!

When I had to remove the speedo gear from the output shaft of my TH400, I tried a pro puller at work, and it didn't want to budge. So I set it up vertical on a table and heated the gear somewhat and it fell right off.

Cooled the shaft, flipped it over in the opposite direction vertical in a vise, the jaws at the position I wanted the gear to stop at, heated the gear and dropped it right on. I was amazed how easy it came off and on with some expansion heat.

I tried it first with no heat but I didn't force it real bad, and no go.

Heated it up just with my little propane torch for quite a while and then it was very cooperative.

Well, tonight it went to the end of the street and back twice with the "new" Muncie installed. It shifts up great but downshifts 4-3 and 3-2 aren't right. Looks like time to educate myself on Muncies!

Minor glitch though, the trans is super simple to remove and replace.

About 10 miles of road testing and now the downshifts are great. I wonder if the synchronizers were just dry from the trans being apart? You'd never know it had downshifting issues.

My wife watched the video and said "Where's the big smile?!" I told her I was smiling inside during the video but I really was smiling, LOTS. I am SO happy with how it drives. It feels very very natural, like it was built with the 4 speed.

It's an M20 with 3.07 gears. I thought the gears would be too high but it seems fine. The tires are 225 70 14 so not a real tall tire. I know original would have been 3.31 but I like this since most of my driving is to shows, so majority is highway driving.
