1968 Grande Parisienne auto trans question.

My 1968 Grande Parisienne has the 396 engine and surprisingly only a two speed auto (console shift). I bought the car from the original owners, so I know most things about it, but am curious as to whether or not it might be a fairly low production number out of the 1296/1294 made because of the large engine, small trans combo. I would have expected a 3 speed auto with that 396? Anybody help me out with this? Thanks........

You are likely correct in assuming it's low production. I don't know if I've seen a 68 396 with a powerglide in a B body. I knew it was available in 66 and maybe 67 but never thought so for 68.

Only problem is, in this case rare may not = desirable but a TH400 is not a real difficult swap and it certainly makes the car a lot more pleasurable to drive.

My '68 brochure shows powerglide was available with 396. Wouldn't be my choice.

At first glance it seemed surprising it would have even been offered with the BB. I could be wrong, but for non performance use, wouldn't the PG be fine? In fact, with the big torque of the 396, I bet you really wouldn't even notice much of a difference through the range. The PG has a tallish 1st, but the final ratio is the same as the TH. Another plus is that glide is pretty durable. Could it have been a thought towards sticker shaving for those who weren't concerned? GM trying to move an overabundance of now unloved glides? Could you get it with a 427?

I'd say with the smaller low torque V8's in the big car, that's when the TH350 or 400 would prove a noticeable benefit.

I believe no B body 427 powerglides were sold. I'm quite sure the mandatory trans for them was a TH400 (other than 4 speed of course) biggrin

And I guess the HD 3 speed manual but don't if they ever sold one...

My 66 396 was a Powerglide equipped car.. Apparently the ones that went behind the Big Blocks were a heavier one than ordinary with more clutch packs so might in themselves be worth saving.

My car was a very well equipped car so cost probably wasn't the reason.  The only thing that I can figure (and I don't mean to be sexist here) is that I was told that dealer had bought this car for his wife so she may have wanted something "easier" to drive.

That may have been the case and the reason they still offered it. The 396/325 wasn't really considered a muscle engine (and price wise was quite a cheap option actually) but may have in many cases been part of a car that was designed to be an easy driving, almost luxury car that had "passing power".  Ie a "lady's hot rod".

Great answers and thanks to everyone for chipping in. I believe that the car was a new 'off the lot' purchase here in our little town of 18,000 people so I am figuring that all the comments above are most likely true. It only has AM radio and ps/pb, but oddly it has tilt wheel and rear window defogger, lol, as well as the vinyl top and as previously mentioned console shift. Maybe by the time they got to the trans box, there were no funds left to check off a better choice, lol. I just don't want to sell it and find out later that there were only a dozen made As 66 Grande guy mentioned, perhaps it was purchased as a wife's car because I believe the husband did own a truck..... It's getting tired now though sitting in poor storage and although only having 60 thousand miles (almost exactly), it looks like 160.....

Did you ever post pictures of the Grande Doug? I don't remember them.
