WE just got home from a 1500 mile trip through 4 states and the stations we stopped at to fill up just off the interstates all had up to %10 ethanol. While filling up our 48 many people stopped by to talk about the car so I asked them about the crap fuel at the pump and most were pissed at the ethanol in it.So even in the states they have to deal with crap with most guys telling me their cars run like crap and get poorer mileage. Myself our car suffers from rough idle to very hard to restate after a break using that crap gas. Reports from club members I have talked to complain about the crap eating away at the carb, fuel pump and lines and poor gas mileage as it does burn as well as pure gas. I was told by one guy while filling up he uses his smart phone to tell him where pure gas stations are but some are up to 10 miles off the interstate so that doesn't work. While on a tour in Wisconsin I stopped to top up the tank at a Mobile station and saw premium ethanal free so I did the happy dance and filled her up.

Yeah, I can't see how it's economical to buy cheaper fuel that damages your vehicle. Once you figure in cost of repairs and perhaps a tow bill, the savings dwindle away. Not to mention the unthinkable possibility of a fire!
Why not run ethanol-free premium, and take advantage of the higher octane with a little tuning?
Until just recently with the float trouble i had, i have never had any issues at all with either my 57 or my 74. So i have done really well considering. If i was to have all kinds of issues with both cars, then of course i would run the premium stuff. At this point right now i see no reason to start always buying the rich mans blend. I put 3,000 to 4,000 miles on my 57 every year and about 1,000 to 1,500 miles on the 74 every year. If i was to always run premium in both cars i would bankrupt. I am just keeping a watchful eye right now with both cars. Cheers.

George , seeing as you don't drive a whole lot your playing with the devil!!! As cars sit around that's when the ethanol does it's "dirty work" just eating away while it sits!!! Just got back from Cobourg AACA show, filled up with Shell V plus in Bowmanville, dumped in octane booster & hit the 401. Did a gear swap on 409 last week, took out the 3:08 and went 3:70 lit the 409 up, yes it's a bit harder on fuel, but not complaining, can't have it both ways, car launches much better, funny noise from back tires in 1st. 2nd. & 3rd. Just found out I won best in class 60 to 64!! had to leave early, heat & humidity just too much for us!!!!

I put 6 to & 7000 on each car so I'm ahead of you, didn't see your 57 but did see a brown 74 wagon that left before we did, 2 rows away??? A/C with no belt??? Voted for that car. Have already put over 3500 on 64 wagon so far this year, another 1250 mile trip to WV coming in sept. /oct. so should be on track to hit those mileage figures. If you still don't want to use Non ethanol H/T, I'd be putting ethanol additive to get rid of water absorption, that "Crap" attracts water like a sponge

The ethanol eats rubber, if you use it make sure any rubber fuel lines and new and ethanol resistant. For really good fuel lines, get some marine stuff, its much thicker in black rubber and you can get alternatives to rubber as well that is much better quality.

I know where you're coming from, and it's your decision obviously. If they were my cars I'd want to make sure that my rubber fuel hoses weren't rotting from the inside and about to dump fuel on my hot engine. Maybe regular checks might work, or at the very least take Don's advice and buy upgraded hoses. The other stuff might just be an inconvenience, but an engine fire will cost you a lot more than any amount of premium fuel you might buy.
All the best to you, George.

I thought i would bump this great thread from the past on a very important subject, concerning our vintage cars and today's crappy fuel. Any added thoughts by anyone or actual personal experiences. Cheers.
