Having a little trouble getting the rear drum off. 1961 Canadian Pontiac.
I can rotate them. They wiggle a little bit. But it seems that the piece circled is holding them on. Should that come off in some fashion? Not sure if I have got the shoes backed off enough either as they make the adjuster really hard to get to. Ugh. Thanks.
If the shoes are worn into the drum it can be a bear.
Have you stuck a screwdriver in behind the edge of the drum? I've had luck sometimes with 2-3 screwdrivers at different spots and tapping the drum while the screwdrivers have pressure outward on the drum.
But if you can back the shoes off, do it all you can because that is likely what's holding it if the drum wiggles but won't slide off. Does the drum also move in and out a little bit? I've also used a little bit of penetrant where the axle pokes through the drum but you don't want to get that stuff on your shoes unless you are replacing them and don't care.

If you have a long tiny screw driver....push on the self adjusting brake tab while backing off with the brake spoon. This will make it go a lot faster and won't round off the self adjusting teeth. It's a tight fit but do it all the time.

Can also pry from the holes in the face of the drum at the end of axle once shoes are backed off. Have bent screw drivers to proof it!

Spray your "red circle" with a little wd40 (I use one made by Sea Foam) or some kind of penetrate, just a little and let it sit. Do the same around the bolt holes. Just don't use a whole lot of penetrate. Back off the adjuster as much as you can (61's do not have self adjusters BTW, that started in 63). Tap the back side of the drum firmly all the way around. Place a flat screwdriver into those holes on the face of the drum and tap the screwdriver with a hammer. Once it starts to move, pry with the screwdrivers in those holes as long as you can and keep tapping the back sides of the drum to keep is moving out.
I find swearing helps too.

Spray some penetrating oil around the centre. Give a hit in between the studs all the way around. Watch your aim. And then with one hand pull on one side while giving a hit on opposite side. Don't hit the back. Hit the side. And use a decent size hammer. Works
