1959 261 Valve cover torque

Greetings to all.

Replaced leaking valve cover gasket on 1959 7519 6.

What would be a save torque spec for the 4 screws that hold it on?

There is no mention in the manual. Its such a large and long cover only supported by 4 screws and Im afraid to mangle it.

Many Thanks in advance.

Robert

Did you use those "spreader" washers? They were on v8's, not sure about the 261. I use a product called Hylomar blue on both sides of any and all gaskets, I think it comes from the airplane industry and is also used in marine so its good stuff for sealing without being permanent.

I just tighten the screws by feel, hard to overtighten a phillips screw head as compared to a bolt head?

I once confused "inch-pounds" with "foot-pounds" on a valve cover, stripping the threads. Don't be a fool like me.

Thanks so much gents. I went 24" lbs and even that seemed too tight. I backed off and snugged them to what I thought appropriate. Scary that....

Yes, did foot pound inch pound thing, valve body on a C-6 '72  Lincoln. Sickening feeling as I felt it stripping out as I spun the bolt in and realized what I'd done.

Bit of JB weld, back it went, fine 10 years later.

Thanks again, all the best.
