You have to send the MTO a matching pair of plates in presentable condition. Then they check to see that the numbers on the plates are not being used already, like on trailer plates or the like. If you are good to go then you put your license sticker on it.

I used to run vanity plates ....here in BC.....about 25 years ago......but the cost became excessive......You don't see them anymore...because of that...

You can check them no charge online.  Go to the MTO webside for own choice plates and select the number when it asked to see if the number is available. If it is then decide if you want to pay the funds to have them registered

Free here in Saskie as well... once they check, I see the gals at the counter, pay the $78 as the YOM is the same a personalized plate, usually wait a week to be printed, get them to switch and add that plate to your specific vehicle and a way to go...

Not sure what they need to check. If you have a pair, no one else will have the same plate. If you only have one then that's a different story. I got a single 1929 plate for my Model A and it was rejected at registries (being used already). So had to get a different one which was Ok. I wasn't charged for them to check.

Let me be the first to answer this as I have had a ton of first hand experience and lent a hand to and along with one of my SGI (Saskatchewan Gov Insurance) Issuer buddies in being instrumental into getting the YOM plates brought into Saskie.... Also, almost every vehicle that is able to run a YOM plate in my possession, has them.... mostly DR (dealer) or X (Government RCMP cars) A set isn't required as we only use 1 plate..

YOM.JPG

YOM-1.PNG

YOM-2.PNG

YOM-3.JPG

Since the YOM is essentially a personalized plate, they had/have to check to see if the "name" (number) is available and not already taken.... case in point, I wanted Hobbs for a plate of my, back then, recently passed away kitty but it was taken and had to use Hobbs1 instead...

In Saskatchewan at least, they re-rolled the numbers for the new year plates, up to '76 and '77 went to the number/letter system... so, it is possible for 2 people in 2 separate parts of the province to have the same number on a plate, odd to have a set broken up and scattered but more for non same year plates... There are no YOM plates issued from '77 on....

Case in point, I bought a box of plated and to say without sounding like a teenaged schoolgirl, giggy, when I saw what this guy was cool enough to do... he asked for and got the same last 3-digits on each plate as much as he could.... So, if that plate was already issued/stamped, that plate was no longer available to any YOM, ever!

In the pics below, this is why they need to check to see if the number is taken...

So they don't care about the year. It's just the numbering. Here I thought the guy who sold me that plate split the set and sold someone else the other one. Definitely makes more sense it was same number different year. Thanks for clarifying that.

Correct... That being said, I am just quoting for Saskatchewan...

Here is a plate I had YOM'ed for my '53 Bel-Air... You get the date correct plate issued to you, go to an issuer and if you have a existing plate on your vehicle, they switch it free, issue an updated registration with the YOM plate number and then you can install...
