I "think" I'd heard that US customs is "now" collecting the sales tax from whatever state it was purchased in, if not paid when buying car there??? They want their TAX $

You have to pay the state tax in Florida to get a 10 day license plate. I am not sure about other states. The ITF number is only a year old and now you need it if you plan on reselling the car back to the US. The Canadian side does not care if you do not have the number or get the title stamped. I brought a 2003 Grand Marquis back to Canada in May without getting the ITF number or getting the title stamped.

I will be getting the number this year as I have an Americian friend that will get the number for me as you have to be an Americian citizen to get the ITF number. It is a lot of paperwork to get it or you can hire a broker to do the work for you.

In Florida when applying for a temporary plate they will collect the state tax that is the highest between which state you will bring the car. If bringing the car to Canada the state tax is either 6 or 7% depending on which county you get the plate. Some states the taxes are higher or lower. If the state you live in it is lower you have to do more paperwork in that state to get a refund on the difference. There are still a couple of states that have no state sales tax.

They want their sales tax money. So if you are considering importing a car add 30 % on the dollar plus state sales tax appx 7% then add federal tax at 5% and then add provincial tax Ontario 8% and do not forget the $100 surcharge for air conditioning. All together just add 50% to the price of the car when you consider buying it.

The only break you will get is the $800 dollar deduction if you did not buy anything else. If you wife, son, brother, father or mother is travelling with you. You can also get their $800 deduction if they did not purchase anything to import. The trick to getting this is when you fill out the title you put both names on the title . You have to be in the US for 14 days to get this deduction.
