New '60 Pontiac owner in Central Alberta

IMG_1631.JPGHi everyone! I'm Jeff and I recently bought my first Pontiac, a Suntan copper, 1960 Strato-Chief 4 door sedan with a 261/Powerglide.

I've been in to old vehicles for 30 years, originally GM, and then recently I was deeply involved with finned Mopars...

but I got in TOO deep, so I sold them all off and went old-car-free for 1.5 years.

Then last month I saw this Poncho, and you know how that goes!

The cool thing is, this car has a nearly identical twin, referring to Jake B.'s car...are you on here Jake?

I'm grateful to be a part of your group! Looking forward to talking Pontiac/old cars/travel/etc biggrin

Thanks guys! Yep that's the car from Kijiji, I have wanted to buy Goodyear Custom Super Cushion's for many years but couldn't afford them, so it sure felt good to finally get them. I'm amazed how nicely they perform for bias ply!

I wish I knew more about this car but the guy I bought from was one of those types that's friendly when you're buying, but not so much after the fact...couldn't get any answers about the car's past from him.

I'm fine with it but I have an oversize monitor!

I wouldn't worry about it, you can't change your pictures down to a size just to keep everyone happy. Besides, I used to use a dinky little screen and that helped push me over the edge to buy a decent sized one.

Dad's first new car was a '57 Plymouth Savoy 2-door. Dusty Coral with white roof, it had fins! It replaced a stock $75 Model A bought after University.

 Thanks George, aka Long Stroke, love the name btw, ha! I promise that 261 will remain in her; I am a huge, huge, HUGE fan of inline engines;

for one thing with our ethanol-laced fuel, they are more reliable in my experience. Carb stays cooler. This car has an electric fuel pump,

and I'm truly amazed by how well it starts, hot or cold.

I love an inline's shake when they shut off, I love how they sound, especially the Stovebolts. It's an absolute dream to drive, 

best old car I've ever owned by far.

 

 

One question for you folks - The Powerglide seems noisy to me, is that normal for them to humm when in park and at higher speeds, and not always like going into park?

 I have always been a big fan of old GM inline sixes as well, i have had more than a few. The cast iron Power Glide (1950-1962) does hum or whine when in park, they all did. If it is not going into park very well is because of a linkage issue. There are a number of bushings that wear out or break and they are all reproduced. I had a 57 Chev Bel Air with cast iron Power Glide and i never heard any hum or whine at high speeds. These transmissions were good and reliable but they all leaked and that is something that there is no cure for. Love your 60 and good luck with it. Cheers. George

I've only owned 2 Powerglides, in a '68 Beaumont and a '72 Nova, and they both whined, especially at idle.  I had always wondered if that was normal or were they just worn out...

Same story here, as you know! Was into finned Mopars, sold them all off. Thought I was out of the car hobby for a while, but bought another one whithin a year. I bought a 59 Pontiac!.. You bought a 60!!.. Amazing to find you here!

Wow! Your car is gorgeous!! And a lovely shade of green (not surprised, you have excellent taste in colours, haha) The 283 was a wise choice, one of GM s finest V8s in my opinion. Excellent work. Survivors are nice!!
