Just looking at a small block casting site, it should be (correct me if I am wrong) F Flint, 1 Chevrolet, 009s is the production sequence number (I think) J October, 8 8th day, 8 model year of car 1968.  3782870 is a 2 bolt cap block made from 1962 - 65.  Car, truck 250 hp to 375.

You might want to get the numbers stamped in the block and those numbers should provide more info.

Could it be J 8 3, not J 8 8?

A 68 327 is a large journal and the 870 casting block is small journal.

Or maybe J 8 6 ?

My bad,  Just looking at a small block casting site, it should be (correct me if I am wrong) F Flint, 1 Chevrolet, 009s is the production sequence number (I think) J October, 8 8th day, 8 model year of car 1968.  3782870 is a 2 bolt cap block made from 1962 - 67.  Car, truck 250 hp to 375.

There should be a pad at the front of the engine on the passenger side where the head sits on the block.  There will be a small flat pad there with numbers stamped into it.

Well, technically the 870 blocks are likely the same, hi perf or not. There are no 4 bolt main small journal 327 blocks, so whether it came from an injected Corvette or a Biscayne station wagon, I am betting the block is identical other than the stamping (which is not there!)

So, J 8 3 would be: J October, 8 8th day, 3 model year of car 1963

Should be, so it would be from a 1964 model car of course.

The numbers stamped in the block would give a little more info.

I don't think it would have a vin in those years but normally it would have had a suffix code after the date stamp showing what it was installed in. But, as with a lot of things in that era, there is a good chance it got missed.

250 HP 63's were not stamped, 300HP was stamped with partial VIN. It would have come from a US Chevy and the S makes it a full size Chevy 250HP with powerglide I think.

For 1963 and I assume 1964, the following information would be true:

Check the heads, they would be camel humps if a 300, triangles if a 250HP. 2 inch exhaust manifolds if a 250HP and 300HP had 2.5 inch. 250HP had a rochester 4GC and 300 an AFB. Change the heads, exhaust manifolds, and carb and you have a 300, they both had the same cam.

Hmm, the birthdays keep coming but I'm still learning!

I didn't know the Canadian cars had partial vins on any of the engines in that era. I thought that was just in the US.

it looks like a date code to me with S being the suffix code  F  asembly plant then 1009 being October 9 th the next day after being cast If that's possible the S for suffix code. Like don said 250 hp engine .  The date codes I have seen all start with assy plant then a four number stamping for month and day Followed by the suffix code. Codes starting with S are shown for 62 to 64.

Carl, to be clear, Canadian cars had an engine number stamped, the number shows up on the gm heritage docs, at least my 62 bel air 283 had the numbers. 63 up us cars had partial vins on High performance, 327s with 300 hp, and 409s. Corvette had vins starting about 61.

Hi guys been thinking ,,car has a 283 in now from 67 factory maybe 190 hp ? added a 4 bar carb so maybe 200,,IF my 63 327 has only 250 hp putting the 63 327 heads on my 283 would it not be darn close to the 250 the 327 might have..? be alot easyier to change heads than pull and install motors ? whats your thoughts and pros and cons ?? Thanks once again guys

I love 283's but the power difference between that a 327 is worth the effort to swap, at least to me. There's really no low end power with a 283 where a 327 has some grunt.

327, my favouritest small block ever!

I have been told that ..would not the added comp from the 327 heads not improve low end on the 283.. it runs real nice but yep power is lacking

A 283 makes all it's power with rpm, if that makes sense. Not much for torque.

Don't get me wrong though, they are great but if you want some guts you want a 327.
