RE: 327 Codes

As far as I've ever seen, and for whatever reason, GM used the "I" for a one on those stampings. All the stampings I have ever looked at use the "I" there in place of 1. That particular one should be October 9th, 10/09 from what I see.

You'd think GM could afford a stamp kit with a "1" in it...

What they did not do was use I as a code, they used G, H, J, etc. in engine stamping codes but skipped the code I to avoid confusion with a one. Not sure they really avoided confusion, just made a different kind.

That is incorrect. I was regularly used in place of 1 at Tonawanda and Flint (I can't recall seeing a McKinnon case though) and also used in casting dates at some casting plants.

O and 0 were also regularly interchanged, and also 9 upside down as a 6. Here are a few examples showing I as 1, O as 0 and upside down 9 as 6. I can't find it but I have one with two I's, two 1's, two O's and two 0's.

Good grief! As if things weren't already confusing enough lol I don't have my new ride home yet but this thread is interesting to me because my 63 has a 4bbl and dual exhaust...PO says 283 which means he installed the 4bbl or it's not a 283...maybe 327. Sorry if this constitutes hijacking..................
