valve springs


Hi guys  when breaking in my L 79 cam  I have bought double springs..I have read to run my old springs or take the middle spring out of the new doubles ,till I have broke in my cam for 20.30 mins...then put new doubles in...and adjust lash again ..seems alot of work...Has anyone heard of many that at break in go with the double springs at break in and have had no probs..?  Thanks again

I forgot to mention I will have motor in car at cam break end Not on a stand,,thats why I say alot of work

Hi Bill,

A few years ago I had a rebuild done on my L72 (427/425) Biscayne.

Prior to starting the engine for the first time, I removed the inner springs. Although it is a daunting task, the extra work involved will save you beaucoup $$$ in the end if you wipe out a cam.

Go the 'extra mile' remove the inners and break in the cam worry free. It's somewhat labour intensive but certainly worth the effort.

Thanks Zapper 68 I figured I was safer pulling the centre spring as I hear its a 50;50 chance of success breaking in a new cam I do tend to get lazy haha Best do everything I can to get it done right ..hoping for the best..this site is so darn helpfull
