It's very nice. Not many if any Pontiacs at all get by us on here, saw it on Long weekend in September at Queensway Swap.

Very nice but weren't the Slim Jim transmissions problematic? If so, what was the issue?

Bernie, thanks for making the information on this rare tranny. After reading the information, i think i will stick to old fashioned three on the tree stick transmissions. Cheers.

I really like it. If I owned it I would probably appreciate it even more. Most likely it is a 303-horse 389.

I look upon the Slim Jim with about the same malaise as a modern CVT trans. They work well enough for a non-demanding driver, and are probably best in the hands of somebody who appreciates what they were all about and respects what their limitations were.

The early Hydra-matics were dual-range 4-speeds. Even Lincoln used them for a period. So did WWII Cadillac tanks & GMC 6x6 trucks.

The TH400 made it's debut on selected 1964 Pontiacs (Bonneville?) & Cadillac. By 1965 the TH400 was extended to Oldsmobile with a variable-pitch stator (trick stuff!), the rest of the U.S. Big Pontiacs, the 396/325 U.S. Chevrolet. Buick was a stubborn holdout with the Super Turbine transmission.

I find it incredible the Chevrolet made the Powerglide up until March 1973. Chrysler gave up on the 2-speeds at the close of  the fifties, and Ford last used 2-speeds in 1964. Studebaker & AMC were into 3-speed automatics probably by the time the 1960s dawned (even if they were the Borg-Warner automatics). Racers still appreciate the simplicity, toughness & efficiency (for specific drag racing situations) of the Powerglide. Go figure.

Ahem. This thread is about a '63 Catalina Safari, and a nice one. I've got to dig out my 1970's Hot Rod magazines to find an article on a racer who ran a white '63 Catalina Safari within the stock classes. The racer ran the '63 wagon after the NHRA rulebook banned earlier cars like the 1953 Olds the racer was previously running.

I've never seen a Turbo 400 in a 64 US Poncho [even Bonneville] but I guess it's possible. When I had my 64 2+2 I swapped out the slim jim for a turbo 350 but should have gone for a 700R for Hwy. driving, but 350 was a much better trans. for having some "ponies" up front, & making them "WORK!!!!

As discussed in many blogs, cars are very difficult to sell these days, especially in Canada.

Here's this sweet Catalina again, still at $23,000.

If it was a 409 Parisienne, it would be gone by now, especially a 4 speed. It is a very nice car.

I have had 3 mid 60's American Pontiacs with the 3 speed Rotohydramatic (Slim Jim) transmission. They don't shift the way that the later T400 and T350 do, but they are not bad once you get used to the feel. I found that they kind of slipped into the next gear as opposed to crisply shifting like newer transmissions.  I think they were used only in the 61-64 Catalina and Grand Prix models, to be replaced by the Turbo 400 in 65.

Slim Jims had no Torque Converter, they had a small disc that looked like a centre out of a clutch disc bolted to the flexplate. The shifting was done by hydraulic pressure from pump in transmission. They got the "nickname" because they were designed to fit a very "narrow" trans tunnel. Now days if you can find parts you'll have trouble finding someone to rebuild one of these!!My dad's 63 Starfire coupe had one of these, & it took a pounding from a 16 yr. old kid [ no names mentioned] & held up to that, but were known for failures!!!!!!

Two of mine leaked but the next owner of my last 63 Catalina found someone locally to rebuild it.
