Is anyone else finding Canada post is getting expensive for shipping?
Permalink Closed

I just mailed a hubcap today to a rural Quebec location ( from Winnipeg) and was surprised that the tab came out to 28.00.  It was not a large or heavy package.  That price was with my venture one discount which  is 5%

Anyway in the past I was a fairly active ebay seller and generally found I generally could ship an item like a full size 15 inch hubcap to most Canadian locations for 15.00 tops

As a point of rough comparison I shipped a 15 inch steel rim to Edmonton this past winter and that much heavier item came to 29.00.  I used the same shipping service for both packages - Small Business expedited

I know there are a lot of variables  that determine a shipping cost.  I know at one time the western provinces and BC were considered a particular shipping zone and from Winnipeg it would be cheaper to ship to Vancouver than it was to send something to Toronto

I looked at my bill and I see that they are still charging the fuel surcharge ( 3.00 in the case of this package).  As i recall that charge was added when gas shot up to $1.50 a litre.  I am wondering if it will ever be removed in light of the current drop in gas prices ( or will it be like the GST)

Anyway just since the Xmas shipping season is here I just thought I would mention it - I am thinking more and more it will be a gift card/ Amazon prime Xmas for us and our out of town family members

It can be really expensive. When I offer swag on here I often got burned bad on the shipping. Some BC guys were really expensive to ship to. Was often cheaper to ship items to the US than across Canada. Also had a couple of instances where the price was WAY cheaper when not using my Venture 1 card. Lady at the post office would give me a quote and I'd ask her to start over without using my card and I'd have cheaper options!

Canada Post is simply too expensive now ( both within Canada and into the US). In most instances the shipping is more than the part itself .

I too have noticed that sometimes it is cheaper to mail to Florida , than to one province over . I can only imagine what the rates will be in the future with the union issues at CPC

Ya...wel ya gotta pay for all the idiot union fees and those crazy salaries they get paid to screw millions of customers this time of year who use the mail service-yes I am extremely pissed off with our mail service we call Canada Post-they are the worst company to deal with and probably the most dis-organized bunch of people I have ever dealt with.We do over a million dollars worth of business per annum with them and they treat us like garbage.Ask me how I truly feel about our beloved mail service.Try relying on them for your companies income-brutal is being kind.Should I go on?

They charge by both size of the package and weight. I was once told my package wasn't big enough because instead of putting on 2 or 3 stamps they insisted on their computer generated label which was package size.

Canada Post = dinosaur

Agreed, I've been shipping a fair bit lately and it sure seems to cost a lot more than just a couple of years ago.

However, USPS is the same issue. Last winter I used them to mail a stock 4 speed shifter body, handle and rods from Phoenix to home here in Manitoba. It cost me $59 US to ship----ouch! I could have used UPS to the North Dakota border only 25 miles away from me for about 20 bucks but that would have meant a special trip to the border. I think next time I'd do UPS though, that $59 US gave me a pain in the lower backside that took a while to go away.

I ship a fair bit of old parts and service manuals. Years back there was a special discounted rate for printed material but now they treat it the same as any other package, just go by size and weight.

Shipping with Canada Post now that the union members are pulling this rotating strike action is a bad idea.

Our research at the office suggests Canpar is in many instances less expensive than CP while UPS, Purolator are more costly. Remember that most parcel delivery companies rely on truck and they have to charge a surcharge to pay for all the special taxes we pay on gasoline and diesel fuel.

I sent a '64 CS trunk emblem to Saskatchewan last week for $18.18!no The package wouldn't fit through their "slotted, plexi, shipping gauge thingy", so it was more. I couldn't make the package any flatter without incurring damage to the emblem.

Living on a rural acreage as I do I find Canada Post to be the best of a bunch of pretty bad alternatives.  Most courier services are fairly quick but brutally expensive and of course only deliver to the town depot.  UPS cant seem to find me or the town depot and every time somebody uses them to send something to me against my importuning I end up chasing the package all over the place. I hate them.

Of course Greyhound is no longer an option.

Canada Post is obligated to deliver at least as close as my community box which is about a mile walk from my house.  That I can live with.

Being as they are my neighbours I have some sympathy for the local folks at the Post Office as I have seen what they handle over the years balloon from letters and junk mail flyers to a huge volume of packages with no real change in the number of people who work there.  Around Christmas they look exhausted.  I'm sure they dread the season.

I am regretful of the situation, but glad for the benifit of this group that this was brought up;
I have no idea how bad letter mail may be, but as of a couple days ago, Canada Post is already stating they will be unable to make shipping quote dates because of the rotating strike.

I am wondering with Canada Post already being as expensive as it is, if this will be a nail in their coffin - I have understood that the Christmas package season is pretty much what makes Canada Post not finish out the year in the red.

I sadly have to use it because of convenience but i would vote to get rid of it. They are for the most part, a very expensive flyer delivery service. My mail for many years now is 80% to 90% ad flyers and this i resent so i just put ALL their flyers back in their box so they can deal with them. It is time to put the dinosaur to its final rest.

I find fedex best for us stuff, never ups. I shipped a part Canada Post to New Zealand last week, it was just over 2.2 kms. The cost doubled from $32 to $64 if it was over 2 kgs. USPS used to be a lot cheaper than CP, but not any more.

It isn't just Canada Post that has gotten expensive.......head of celery $3.00, used to be $1.49 tops, food in a restaurant..

a couple of years back lunch for two could be had for $25.00, now the same lunch is close to $40.00

Blame additional costs and new taxes that everyone has to pay, municipal, provincial and federal.

Blame a rise in minimum wage, everybody wants more...snowball effect.

Blame the increase in interest rates on loans that businesses have to pay.

I'll stop there, I don't want to to start ranting about what I really think is the real cause.

No politics should be discussed on this site.

One thing to consider when shipping over the border with the couriers is brokerage fees. I've heard of a few guys getting stung unexpectedly. Of course you sometimes get hit with unexpected duty from Canada Post, but not as bad.
