Overhauling some Chevy’s

1/18 scale that is.  I used to have a few caprices back in the day and happened across a fair deal on a couple by model car group.  As soon as I saw these I instantly fell in love with them. However on closer inspection they are a bit of a poor job in some aspects of accuracy.

I will post post better pics of the cab as I have big plans for it. The red one need some minor work to make more realistic. The big one is ripping off the ridiculous wiper blades. and tonight I spent the evening trying to comprehend why the would make the tail pan correct for 1986 and paint it like 1985.

I took it it all apart, stripped it all, plated with bare metal and re painted it correctly

That will be some real detail work. The end result will be more realism and details. On thing, the subtly-freshened '86 came with 4 rectangular headlights while the '87-on came with large single-unit composite headlamps.

There was a dealer in Barrie back in '89 that ordered a fleet of Caprice 9C1 police package sedans. It was the last year for the dog dish caps and  the cars were all white with plain exterior, hd seats with cloth, F41 suspension, 8.75" ring gear, numerous durability upgrades, probably 305 but could have been 350 for police work. I remember seriously considering one as I had a big 1977 Olds 98 at the time that had around 320K but wifey just couldn't see it. I've always respected the Caprice from that era (except for ones with the 7.5" differentials).

Yes the next project will be to add the detail to the front to highlight the quad headlights and add the rub strips. Of all the cars I had I never had a 9c1 except for a parts car.

There used to be a 1985 loaded Caprice, police spec, Iraqi cars, anyone remember those? Never seen one since back in the day. Another one of those failed car sales to Iraq, like the 1981 Malibus.

Loaded with every option, including graphic equalizer stereo, and a 350.

The proportions on those models are not bad.

I dont recall those cars. Honestly I didnt pay much attention to the 77-85. Although we had 77 when I was young. I had a 77 2 door for a short time. 2 86s ( my favourite year) and two 89s

Since weather was crappy tonight I went back to the shop to work on the little Chevy. Some more detail work and tidying up on accuracies. Cleaned up the lower moldings and highlighted the quad headlamps and painted the rub strips. Need to figure out how to add white walls still.

Still looking for a solution to add some white-walls to the tires or finding suitable tires for a tire swap. Here is this project otherwise complete.

Looks like my parents 86 Caprice Classic Brougham. Except theirs had a vinyl roof and the color was more wine colored. Looks good though!

There's a company selling white wall tire decals on ebay, but they look too wide for your application.  An email to them might determine whether they offer thinner ones.

Thanks.  Ordered a suitable size.  Not sure the chances of putting the thinner ones With those water slide decals. But worth a shot

At least you can remove the decals if they don't go on properly, and try again.

There was a tip in Scale Auto Enthusiast magazine in recent months involving similar sized rod and pipe, machining the rod down to a taper to center on the tire with a pipe closely fitting over the rod.  The pipe end is dipped in white paint and centered by the rod such that the pipe "prints" a whitewall on the tire for you.

I've had some luck using the end of an old 5mm mechanical pencil as a technical pen of sorts.  I'd remove the end of the pencil such that the tapered end with the small metal tube is the part that you use.  I would put a drop of white paint (acrylic, like Tamiya for example - the oil based paints don't always work well with tires) in the large end of the pencil tip, and it would flow into the tube.  If you are steady and careful, you can follow a groove on the tire (if there is one) or you can use a circle template from an old drawing set to guide the pencil tip on your tire.  You have to be careful to be even and steady so you don't create a blob on the tire, but if you do make a mistake the acrylic paint cleans up easily with water or alcohol.

Good work, by the way!

Somebody needs to get into a Cricut, it cuts vinyl, paper, etc. heyletsmakestuff.com/cricut-explore-machine/

"Heck, I even saw someone cut out a metal part for their car because they couldnt find that part at the junkyard."

They are being used to cut vinyl stick on tailgate letters for pickups, the painted parts of dog dish hubcaps, etc., so no problem doing a whitewall. Just need to be a geek to figure out the software.

Micro scale and baremetal foil make 8x11 white decal paper.  You could probably use the circle cutter and cut the white decal paper.  Decals do stick good on model car rubber tires,  i usually do it that way for goodyear lettering, beats hand painting them.

Excellent work by the way,  it is amazing how good they look with some more accurate detailing and painting.
