Well part of GM's announcement today to close Oshawa and a number of plants across the USA relates to their shift to electric and autonomous cars. Poor fellow is going to need some serious psychological counselling when he gets into an autonomous vehicle in then next few years.

Include me in that category.  Luckily it's going to be more than a few years, if it happens at all.  So much more development needs to happen before it could be widespread - the systems are just not that foolproof yet to jump into it with both feet.  Mind you, that has never stopped humans before...

I see autonomous vehicles as being useful in crowded urban environments, and pretty much useless in rural areas (i.e. most of Canada, geographically).  A whole lot of complexity and expense for the owner to deal with, but with little payoff in many environments.  Not to mention that in our colder areas, electric cars are not optimal.  But we'll see, I guess.  Canada is such a small market when compared to the US, we will likely get whatever is forced upon us due to the sheer numbers involved.  i.e. the vast majority of development costs for a new vehicle will go towards tailoring it to the larger market.

Perhaps it would be considered selfish of me, but I enjoy driving way too much to just give it up and let some computer take over.  I will hold on to my non-autonomous vehicles as long as I am able...

... And they say the making of the batteries for these things (notice I don't call 'em cars) pollutes more than gas powered cars !
