No ideas?  Can anybody identify the weak point in the system?

I'd put in a circuit breaker just in case....how do I know? Back in the 80's I had a trio gauge setup under my dash in my 57. Amps/oil/temp the oil was a copper line(didn't like the plastic ones) that went under the dash through the firewall to the back of the block. I left a bit of slack so it wouldn't be stressed. Some how with all the people getting in/out of the car(sometimes 4 crammed in the front!) the copper wire shorted across the ammeter terminals right when I was turning onto a side road! Melted the copper line...smoke and oil everywhere!!!! Pulled over once onto side road, jumped out and unhooked bat. Was lucky she didn't burst into flames.... guess I left too much slack in the copper line!hmm One of those "car times" you never forget.

Yup... circuit breaker of some sort sounds like a good idea!

Great story... I can picture the feeling of panic, the smoke and the smell!  Glad it didn't turn into a BBQ!!
