Neighbor's old '72 LeMans GT 400 4-barrel 4-speed used that air cleaner. Car was ordered & owned by a fanatic that took Delivery in November '71 and immediately put it away for winter. He also had vinyl seat upholstery placed over the original cloth & vinyl bench when new. He also had a spare OEM complete decal set for the car. Side splitter tips were originals, not the incorrect repros. Original owner sold it to my neighbor in '89. Neighbor sold it around 2002.
We sold half a dozen of these at $150 a pop about 5 years ago at annual Toronto International Airport Centre swap. We did get $900 for a HO one though.
Hi Ray can you please describe the difference between the HO air cleaner and the standard dual snorkel air cleaner. I forget the difference and need a refresher course. This would be good info to share to explain the huge value between the two air cleaners. Sometbing about the Snorkel flaps ?

This is the 1972 style that I got big money for plus I had boots and all fittings.
The one that is posted for sale....is the drop base version......which was specific to 70-72 4bbl Firebird Formulas...without Ram Air.
It would work on an A body.....but the A body ones sit too high on the 2nd gen bird....so the hood won't close...
Nailed it.
On an engine, they look the same, but take off the lid, and the differences are quite apparent.
I have one of each.

The HO's used dual heat risers - so each snorkel had a heat tube attached to it; Non-HO applications only had provisions for a single heat riser - on the drivers side.
The air cleaner that 73SC showed was actually a "ram air" air cleaner that was also used on 1971-1972 455HO GTO's.
In all, there are actually four distinct varieties of 70-72 Formula (4bbl) air cleaners; 1) dual snorkel non-RA (Ram Air); single heat riser; 1970-1972* 2) dual snorkel non-RA; dual heat riser; 1971 455ho w/o-RA only 3) 'Ram Air'; single heat riser**; 1970 RAIII & 1973-1974 w/"hood inlet" option 4) 'Ram Air'; dual heat riser**; 1971-1972 455HO
* = 1971-1972 air cleaners had holes for the fuel bowl vent tube; 1970 air cleaners lacked this hole. ** = some air cleaners have spot welded locating studs, to 'clock' the air cleaner properly on the engine.
Type '2' air cleaners are probably the most valuable of them all, closely followed by type '4'.
Type '1' & '2' air cleaners look identical to the GTO, GP ect air cleaners except for the drop base - which can only be seen with the lid removed.
To the best of my knowledge, full sized 70-72 Pontiacs, and sedan versions of the Tempests & Lemans' received single snorkel air cleaners - the dual snorkel units were reserved for the "performance" models.
