so a long time back I ordered the brakes for the 66 off of ebay and now I go to install them I have 2 inch wide shoes and 2.5 inch wide drums. Every thing says front or back but buddy tells me 2.5 for front and 2 inch for back.
Right from Chevrolet, "Drum diameter - 9.5. Lining width - front 2.5" , rear 2.0. Total lining area 168.9 sq. inches."
The Corvair used the same 9.5" drums but with 2" lining width up front, 2.5" rear. Same lining area.
Er, wait. Kevin, are you referring to the full-size models? They have 11" drums. Width for the front linings in that case should be 2.75", rear 2".
You know, Sintered Iron shoes were offered when new on a '66. The shoes, instead of being bonded asbestos, were welded iron segments of lining that were only 1.64" wide up front. They wore like granite, were scary until they warmed up (opposite of asbestos linings) and the segments were designed to grow together with thermal expansion under hard use.
