Did you know that you should always use your credit card when purchasing....at least items that carry warranties.

Did you know?

We all know of why we always use our credit cards..... because we can delay having to pay for an item.

or maybe for travel insurance.......

But how many know of the extended warranty that credit card companies like MasterCard,VISA and American Express  offer

at no cost just for using their card? Not something the credit card companies like to advertise...so they don't.

I bought an item that had a manufacturer's warranty of three years that included loss of the item.

You guessed it,I lost it...half a year after the three year warranty, so it was no longer covered by the manufacturer's warranty, but  because I paid for it

by VISA and because VISA had automatically given me a one year extended warranty beyond the three year manufacturer's

warranty. I was able to make a claim from VISA.

Not all things are covered by the credit card warranty a lot of items are. A one year manufacturers warranty will be extended for an additional year from the credit

card company, and I believe the limit is a five year manufacturer's warranty which would also get a one year warranty.

I don't like credit cards and always pay them off at the next bill, but using them to get an extended warranty on a purchase is really a bonus...at no cost.

As for receipts,if you don't have it any longer, go to your bank and get a copy of the credit card bill from when it was listed on that month...the purchase information will be there.

Here's an article all about credit card warranties.

https://www.nerdwallet.com/blog/the-official-nerdwallet-guide-your-credit-cards-extended-warranty-policy/

Make sure you check your own card to see how your extended warranty works.

Hope this helps someone (especially at this time of year)

Everything I buy for the house(Hot water tank,TV,built in Vac, etc) gets the receipt taped to the back of it in a zip lock bag .....whether Card or cash. This way I don't have to go digging for it. Good point on the credit card..never really thought about it.....but now I will!

Interesting information, question though.....

I buy an item, paid with credit card. How do I know that the item is covered?, Do I have to ask the CC company whether it is or not for each item?

As the link article says with the exception of computers and cars, everything that has a manufacturers warranty should be eligible.

I say keep all your receipt for anything that has a warranty.......whatever it might be.......fridge,television,car part it doesn't  matter......

When it craps out after the manufactures warranty you have nothing to lose to put in a claim with the credit card company.

I believe 5,000 dollars is the limit for most claims......check the fine print in you card agreement.

One time when my daughter was a toddler I took her by train to see Barney the purple dinosaur at Exhibition Stadium. God, the things we do for our kids. Anyway somehow along the way I lost the tickets. Because I paid with a credit card and was able to produce the card at the ticket counter, no problem, here's you new tickets. I got to see Barney and it was quite an experience, right up there with shoving bamboo shoots under the nails.
