Editing car photos - turning a 4-door into 2
Permalink Closed

There was a thread here a little while back where we talked about model building (57 Pontiac sedan delivery) and it somehow morphed into picture retouching. Yesterday I sat down with a low-res brochure picture of a 1965 Chevy II 4-door and in my spare time I had turned it into a 2-door by dinner. The tricky stuff is also modifying the background and getting proportions right. This was all done with cut & paste & a little airbrush using an old version of Paintshop Pro. While I was at it I decided to throw on a set of 1964 Corvair 13" wheelcovers, then I modified the center cap to use the bowtie that the Chevy II used. Why you ask? Why not?
So does it look believable?

I based it on this picture:

Maybe the next step is to turn it into a Nova post, a car that was made in '64 but not '65.

Cam, you should be ashamed of yourself. Good work though.

The least you could have done was put a 327 in it right away!

Just kidding, nice work, I never would have known.

You need to have a separate continuous post Cameron for this. You have a ton of detailed auto option knowledge and the photoshops are always well done.

I always like your take on what cars to mod, and how believable they could actually be.

I guess part of the point of this is to show how similar the 2 & 4-door post models are. They share windshield & back window, plus the roof panel & drip rails. It was usually done like that back in the day across most makes.

Yes it is odd though, given an opportunity to crank out a sleeper I instead crank out a snoozer. Those were the cars that predominated on the road back then. It just wouldn't do to have that family have to get into that Chevy II with a ladder because it is sitting high and has a beam front axle, fenderwell headers & tires that belong on a steam roller. And it won't idle because of the cross ram intake & radical cam.

I did try to restore a 2-page 1971 Duster advert that was heavily smudged, scuffed, folded & dog-eared. Let me tell you, the black vinyl top on the Duster 340 is not pure black, in some spots it's orange, some green, some blue, and it you don't transition properly it will stand out like a sore thumb. Anyway I spent quite a while on this one about 15 years back. I added the correct Duster script on the leading edge of the stripes (missing in the ad) and the Duster Dust Trails (only on the Twister!). Looking back on it I can see the rear bumper needs a lot of work (was obliterated on my ad). I also decided to throw a rear spoiler onto the 340 (hey, it was 1971, man). Here's a small preview:
