Mystery Engine ...

I've tried deciphering this engine # with no luck. This is in a '64 Parisienne I bought. No info., that I could find, on the internet.

Does anybody have a clue?

Thanks!

It looks like a legit stamping although I have no clue as to the numbers on that one. Next step is to find casting numbers vertically on the block near the oil filter.

Is this a 283 or 327, any idea?

Didn't we discuss a Canadian Pontiac 283 "17" stamping here a while back? Or am I thinking of something else?

Looks like camel hump heads? Casting number and build date on heads would help.

I'll have to wait for warmer weather to check the casting numbers.

I don't know whether it's a 283 or 327. Is there a quick & dirty visual clue that would tell me?

Yes, there are camel hump heads, but I do not know if they are original, because there is also a Holley 4 barrel & GM 4 barrel cast iron intake on the engine.

I'll have to poke around a little more.

283 with a cast iron crankshaft also has a balancer. Cast iron crank started in 66 l think.

Found some info.!

Block info:

3849852 Small Block V8 1957-1966 283, 2 bolt

Intake info.:

3872783283-32766-68Pass,Corvette,Chevelle,Chevy II,
LT Truck
4 BC,cast iron,Holley

Carb info.:

LIST # 6213 model 4165 spread bore 800 cfm double pumper carburetor

I think it has way too much carburetor for the engine!

At a later date (when it gets warmer) I'll get the camel hump head info.

The carb may be ok. The Holley spread bore was basically a replacement for the Rochester quadrajet. It would depend more on what jets are in it, but the small primary venturis would make it work on a 283.

Hello Mystery, I have a 1963 Pontiac Parisienne conv. and knew the motor wasn't original, so I called Oshawa who lead me to Classic Chevy (Musueum?) in Michigan, as All Canadian Pontiacs had Chevy drivetrain most of the motors were built at McKinnons in St. Catherines Ont.. He took the code I gave him, and in 2 minutes told me my motor was originally placed in a 1971 Chevelle or El Camino and that it was a 350 with 245 horsepower. I think yours will most likely be a 327 as all 327's from 1961 to 1964 were 4 barrels.......but it may have been pieced together. Sorry I can't find the phone number for you as I called them last spring...good luck....Terry
