A Tribute

5 years ago tonight I lost one of my best friends, my oldest brother. He was 100% responsible for my love of cars. He was one of those guys who there was never any doubt what he'd do in life. From the time he was 2 years old when he was visiting our uncle's farm and was showing my uncle each grease zerk on the tractor so my uncle would know where to put grease, he loved all things mechanical. (True story, he watched my uncle doing a grease job and was pointing out grease zerks!). Barrie died suddenly while driving in Chicago that night. He had gone there to pick up a salvage boat, his retirement hobby. Thankfully, his son reached over and brought the car safely to a stop so the other 2 people in the car were unharmed.

I sure miss our calls and visits when we could swap stories on all things mechanical.

He was a well respected man by all who knew him.

If you guys have a friend or family member who is special to you, make sure you let him/her know.

Sorry to hear he's gone. Sounds like he was a great man and you two had a special that can only exist between brothers.
Keep those fond memories close.

I'd likely be a whole lot wealthier if he hadn't been part of my life (because I wouldn't have spent it all on old cars!) but I wouldn't be near as happy!

5 years gone by already Carl. Funny how the years fly by when you think of that against a loved one. Sounds like he was a good role model for you Carl. He did a good job.

I remember that you've talked about him a few times before. And of course that picture was your avatar for a long while.
It's tough loosing someone so close.

Losing somebody so close is really difficult. The pain subsides but never fully goes away. Carl, you have spoken well of your brother and his influence on your life. You are honoring him by remembering him and appreciating all the ways he influenced you.

I know I would be devastated to lose my older brother. My father had been through many things in his life (like WWII) and was always stoic, but I had never seen him as shaken as when he came back to the car after seeing his older brother alive for what would turn out to be the last time. That was way back in 1966. Now they are together in a better place...

I don't even know that it's painful as much as I just plain miss his company.

I have chosen to focus on and be grateful for all those great years we were able to enjoy our friendship.

I have a relative who often talks about the things that are gone in her life and in doing so seems to completely block out all the blessings she's had in her life. I just can't live that way, it's so counter-productive.

I know a number of you have talked about your brothers and how you are great friends. I love seeing/hearing that, even when I don't have Barrie here any more.

A few weeks back after church one morning I was talking with our pastor. I mentioned to him how it changed my attitude in life tremendously years ago when I realized I was much happier rejoicing when other people had success and great blessings in their life. Being jealous of them and their situation can not possibly make my life better.

You make a good point Carl. When I lost my dad I was surprised that rather than being stuck in sorrow, I actually found myself smiling when I thought back to all the times we had, and how grateful I am for the times we had. He gave so much of himself and I realize I was a lucky recipient. Really. nod.gif

I have a brother that got me into this too and is having some treatments right now so Im starting to understand.

I was just listening to this on youtube before I clocked in here and it seems kind of connected to this and is pretty powerful.

Ruth Moody, a Winnipeg girl, joins Mark Knopfler on this beautiful farewell song.
