hi , GM lover , kenora ontario , have an american 1949 pontiac silver streak 2dr ,


hi , i acquired a rough 1949 american pontiac 2dr  sedan ,  i assume that it's an orphan on "canadian "  site. flathead silver streak 8 , auto trans, sunvisor , lighted indian hood ornament , radio , back up lamps, underhood work light , fender skirts , etc , all complete , might run , haven't tried yet . front floor is rusted ,rear too i think , visor is loose as rain gutter on rh side is split away from roof , bottom of front hood trim piece rusty , rear back glass broken , front bumper is off , was towed behind a grader as operator  transportation . seats there but rough , not sure if i should part it out or ? i assume it was a deluxe model as it's auto trans and has options, i'm on a small pension so i buy and sell anything to make some cash , found the car and not sure if i should ebay the parts or sell complete , the car is currently in the emo ontario area stored outside . what is it worth as is ?

 on another note i've owned a few pontiacs over the years , and my son currently owns a 1965 CS parisienne ( from manitoba ) and a 1967 grande parisienne 4 dr hdtp , 283 , ( also from manitoba ) , both cars now in ottawa.

Welcome here from Morris Manitoba (and from Little Gordon Lake a lot of the time in the summer!)

I suspect because of limited demand for that era of Pontiacs (so it seems) you'll likely end up parting it out.

Would appear to be a major undertaking to make this car operable to even minimal standards. And then there's the cost of even getting it that far along.

Looks like a parts car unfortunately. If it runs, and the mechanicals work somewhat, it would make it more attractive to sell as a whole.

Welcome! I think it is a cool car. Unless you can do most of the work yourself with a little help from your friends, on a pensioner's budget I don't see a restoration happening. It would be a shame to part it, but as a car guy I put more emotion into it than is realistic.

Hi James

Well, you have an interesting car there.  I happen to be at the end of our project restoration of a 1950 2 door Pontiac Silver Streak.  Your going to get a lot of comments from this site, some positive and some not so. 

What you do with your car is your choice, but as some have stated, a project is costly, especially if you plan on having portions done by others.  I'll say a few things about the Pontiac of the day, the barking system single cylinder master was dangerous and if a restoration is your route , that is one item that should be given lots of thought.  The 2nd item of consideration is the torque tube or propeller shaft differential, not necessarily a show stopper , but an item that requires serious consideration, ie bushings and such.   

I wish I were closer, your car has lots of nice features and the chrome or stainless including vent windows look really nice.    In closing  it's your car,  sheet metal for the floors is reproduced and share common dimension as the Chevrolet Fleetline, not sure about your front fenders, I know I had to repair mine.

The US Pontiac is a totally different animal than a Chevrolet. Open driveshaft and longer wheelbase than a Chevy. It has bendix style brakes but the brake shoes can be hard to get. It will have a four speed hydramatic trans that can be expensive to rebuild, but last very well if you keep the fluid changed as there isnt any transmission cooler. I doubt if the floors would be the same as a Chevy as the frame is different. My car has a 3:70 ratio axle and travels quite nicely at 100kph/60mph, much better than my brother 53 Chevrolet.

I agree with others in that it looks like a big project but would hate to see it parted out.  It may turn out to be your only choice in the end, however.

One thought I had was that I could see your car getting a lot of interest on the HAMB site.  Might be worth a look - here's the link:  https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/

thanks , i don't have very good body working skills , but mechanical and fabrication are not a problem , the car would probably be best with a complete floor/frame swap  on a malibu or monte carlo chassis ? the old straight eight would be a nice hotrod/roadster engine as nobody ever sees one ,( i had a 54 pontiac flat 6 and it was silent when running ), probably parts though , i think i'll see if it fires up this spring and then decide .  more pictures of car , seems complete , partly why i got it ,  even found the interior " accessory fuses , pull to open " metal cover with the pontiac indian head in the car , radio is there , hubcaps , etc , the dual horns and the underhood worklight are still there too. i think the visor and accessories are probably worth the most .

i found a 1949 ford 4dr near this car a while ago and it was rusty but it had every almost accessory that you could buy on it , there were 3 buick style fender portholes on each front fender , held on with robertson screws , i asked the old guy where he got the portholes ,and he said they were on the car in the showroom when he bought it .also had the fender 4 stone guards and front and rear bumper accessory guards, i might pick it up as i have a rented storage lot now . the ford is so rusty that the trunk floor has fallen into the  gas tank as it rusted through on top too .

I suggest you have a look at what this era of beautifully restored cars sell for. There are few buyers and many sellers so several thousand dollars will get you a very nice car. The car hobby is not a rational activity but it's helpful to understand the different factors when making a decision to restore a car or not.
