Snowfall - Just the facts

As happens every year it snows and as happens every year the bragging and barbs come out on our beloved forum. I sourced "CURRENT RESULTS Weather and Science Facts" for the real story and list the average annual snowfalls for Canadian Cities:

Vancouver = 18"

Revelestoke = 150"

Calgary = 50"

Edmonton = 48"

Regina = 39"

Saskatoon = 29"

Thompson = 74"

Winnipeg = 45"

London = 76"

Toronto = 48"

Ottawa = 69"

Montreal = 83"

Quebec = 119"

Fredericton = 99"

Halifax = 61"

St. John's = 131"

Charlottetown  = 114"

Rankin Inlet = 52"

Yellowknife = 62"

Whitehorse = 56"

You can look up most all major centers and see for yourself and make comparisons, some may surprise you like take Saskatchewan cities , 20% less snow than Ontario cities.

While not a city, I spent 9 years in Goose-Bay, Labrador before moving to Saskie... our average was 8' or 96"... as of Jan 25th, they have had just over 12', 144".... and there is still the snow months to come, February and March.. and unlike many cities on the list, this snow stays till the end of season like it does in Foam Lake, Sk... St. John's, Nl, 50 miles from my hometown, where it could be raining and +10C in 3 days time. There is a reprieve of sorts....

Here today like most of the prairies, it was -37, -49 with the wind.

We've had an exceptionally mild winter here in the Fraser Valley, about 100KM East of Vancouver but after 2 worse than average winters I'm not complaining. Watch the news and see how hard everyone East (which is pretty much 99% of Canada) is getting hit and feel for you guys...now I know why Vancouver Island is the retirement capital of Canada.

And the thing that surprises a lot of people is that Winnipeg is 4th lowest snowfall on that whole list. Everyone thinks we are buried in 20 feet of snow here for the winter. True, most of what falls stays, but look at what we get compared to others.

We've had a number of winters in the last decade where the snowmobilers were angry because they had a short season or no season at all.

You've hit on a key factor. In some places it starts snowing in November and piles up till April. In other places it snows then melts, then snows then melts.
When I lived in Northern Ontario we used to have days when it was too cold to snow. Probably applicable to Winnipeg also.

We typically get very little snow in January.

This entire winter I've used the snowblower 3 times.

39 degrees Celsius here in Sydney today, but next week I'm flying to Kelowna for a week's skiing. Send all the snow you like please!
