Bendable steel tubing coating?

I made a 3/8" fuel line yesterday from that stuff you buy at auto parts stores. This line has a dark green coating on it. Has anyone ever had some of this stuff and removed the coating? I'd like to know if there's some chemical I can use to remove it. I'd rather not have to sand or scuff it to remove the coating if possible.

No no no,  dont use teh green stuff.   Buy the Copper-nickel stuff that is not coated.  its avail everywhere too. (but maybe not pistonring)

Can tire has is and so does part souce right out on the floor with all the brake lines.

I  Buy all my cupro-nickel or copper nickel from Inline Tube online,  i have been slowly replacing all the lines on every car with it.  Bends like butter, no need for a tube bender, and it looks factory,   just a very slightly bronzish copperish tinge, but not really noticeable at all.

The green stuff has all the same properties, but looks like crap.

not a great picture, but i just finished this fuel line with the inlinetube stuff,  see cant even tell its not the original stuff

Doesn't that stuff kink easy? I used to get the proper looking stuff in a roll from PR but they must have changed something because it's crap. You can't bend it without it kinking. I was super happy with how the green tube formed, although that may be due to the fact that I borrowed a very nice Blue Point flaring tool and bender from a friend.

I have lots of the copper nickel stuff you can try out if you want,  i just dont think i have 3/8.  I know i have 3/16, 1/4 and 5/16, and they all manipulate like butter.   you will never go back to anything else,   bends super nice, very kink resistant.  You can use the crappiest flare tool and it will still come out perfect.

I know what you mean about the aluminized steel stuff nowadays,  its really hard to bend, and kinks,  maybe its just my hands are not as strong anymore

Friend of mine borrowed the use of my hoist & replaced Brake lines on his "beater" & used the copper/nickle lines, Like you guys
said " bends like butter" we dropped the rusted lines & formed them exactly, bubble flared them & back on, looked perfect!!!! & no leaks!! BONUS

I tried a Scotchbrite pad on that green coating and it doesn't even show that I tried to remove it!

I just sprayed oven cleaner on a junk section of tubing. We'll see if that helps.

You need to get some big blocks around there!

Soaked with oven cleaner for an hour, not even a dent in the coating...

Tried a wire wheel, even that was quite a challenge to get the stuff off.

I may try sandpaper on it.

I think it's PVF Carl.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyvinyl_fluoride

A spray on type paint stripper might get it. But it's resistant to most anything else.

Interesting as to why the coating is now being applied to lines. Its a counter to the sodium chloride "Brine" now  being applied to the roads in winter. It's nasty stuff.

Thanks Mark. I was hoping oven cleaner would do it because it's good at stripping paint, but no luck.

Hey, maybe I'll try some brake fluid. It's a good paint stripper.

Worth a try. but I'm betting it's impervious to it.

I bet those ketone type HD paint strippers in a spray can would lift it. But at that point, it would be the same price to buy a new small section of line.

Maybe a little bit of heat with a propane torch? I might try that.

With all the effort, i think you are better off to just bend a new one with the proper coNi line.  I know, the one you made is mint,  but you could always use that one for your winter beater, it will last forever!

I checked at work and our 3/8" roll is very much a nickel plating on the outside but the inside is totally copper. Is that the stuff you use Dave? If so, maybe I will try making another line.

It's just that as you say, I'm so happy with how this one turned out I can't imagine making a nicer one!
