Vintage Pinstriper

Here's an old tool that I haven't used in quite some time. It works great, you just have to have steady nerves and paint with the right consistency.

The one (left) is an old one that I got decades ago and used. The other one is a new old one I picked up in the box at a yard sale years ago. I'm going to use it again soon.

I used one of those on logging trailers for Peerless Page Industries in Penticton. A lot faster than a brush, for the really long lines, and then a brush for the detail work.

What did GM use back in the day? I remember a neighbor had a brand new 1970 Buick Wildcat that had pin-striping on the body lines that followed the wheel arches and they were not tape. I doubt they used stencils in that application.

Not a stencil as such, but a guide for the workers hand, like a rail.

Cool pic John! Works off vacuum I presume(the guide)?  Remember those from back in the day and always wanted one. Do they still make them and if not....anyone have one to sell?? Thinking I will need glasses(to see) a guide(for a steady hand) and some talent(not so much). Straight lines an 1" long... no problem...I can draw a stick man!!

Cool link! Finally a reference to Von Dutch other than for a T-shirt.

Back in the early 70s there was an awesome 1957 Corvette at a Supertest service station 2 blocks from my house that had amazing pinstriping. The car was in black lacquer with yellow pinstriping that looked like Von Dutch did it, but I seem to recall that it was done by a local artist from Hamilton named Kenny Kay. 283-270 horse with 2-4s. The owner also owned a '70 Challenger R/T SE Hemi from new (1 of 4 sold in Canada).

Jim, they're still available. I've seen them in the tool place just off the highway on Vanalman street. They sell pinstriping paint too!
