There's a huge problem with people passing school buses when the red lights are flashing here in PEI. It's so bad in fact the penalty for doing so is now a 3 month suspension of your license, 12 demerit points and a $5000 fine. The fines for speeding 1-15kmh over seem a little excessive though.

I question the fines ending in 99... what's up with that?

"No sir, it's not $200, it's only $199!"

That's kind of like "2 years, less a day" so you don't have a federal record.....sort of.

None of this is going to happen anytime soon,
but would it make you change the way you drive?

Lefty - are these new fines in effect now? Or are these being proposed by ICBC or government?

I looked online at BC government & ICBC websites but I cannot find anything that references the numbers in your post.

This is one of the sites I found that lists penalties for driving infractions:

https://www.icbc.com/driver-licensing/tickets/Pages/fines-points-offences.aspx

Some of the numbers in your post are absurd (IMHO).  I can imagine someone surviving on minimum wage trying to cough up that much money.  I can see that same person losing their license, and their job, as a result.

I think they should HAMMER drivers breaking the law ... losing their $$$, licence, or job would be a great penalty.

I don't know that I agree with that.  IMHO hammer them on infractions that are clear safety problems, but no so much on stupid infractions that don't affect safety.  I see some infractions as simple revenue generation for the government, and that focus should be on the infractions that cause accidents.

Furthermore, I see the root of the problem as insufficient training and education for drivers.  Each and every driver should have to pass an extensive classroom training course and then a practical driving course that includes skid training, etc.

Part of the course should involve accident studies, explaining cause and effect for each accident so that people understand how quickly and easily accidents can happen and how quickly and easily you can kill yourself or somebody else.

Thirdly, car companies need to be told to get away from all the distractive "infotainment" systems they are putting in cars now.  Just say no to touch screens - they are being used for everything from the radio to operating HVAC, and are very easy to miss your target when you are driving - you have to look away from the road to see which screen you are on, and have to make sure you hit the correct rectangle or you will have to go back and figure out which one you did hit and reverse it.  Too much distraction from actually driving.

IMHO, people don't take driving seriously enough and need to realize that they aren't driving a big smart phone.

All said, we are still dumb humans and we will make poor judgements and screw up from time to time, it's a given.  But there are many ways we can do the driving thing better - but we are not headed in that direction...

What they should add as a Federal offence is life in prison for death related DUI. And not just a couple of years then released but the rest of your natural life. Our Canadian government is way too soft to implement any that harsh. Cell phone fines are a joke. They need to send a message that it is NOT ok to drive either hammered or talking on a hand held device!!! People are dying with minimal consequences to the offenders...........Maybe these people will think differently when it happens to them. And don't get me started on pedestrian/car related deaths in this country!!

It is as simple as "you break the law, you pay the price" ... I don't care if it is just window tint (which some lawbreakers use to conceal illegal activity within their vehicle) or as simple as speeding 1 - 15 kms. over. I'm a firm believer in respecting the law ... hardcore believer.

Hey Darryl, did you know the traffic lights on the Charlottetown bypass are synchronized for driving at 78kmh even though the speed limit is 70? I find that really strange.

So, if you got a speeding ticket for 1 km/h over you'd just pay the fine and accept the demerits?

I respect the law, but I look at the spirit of the law too. In my opinion anything within 10% of the posted limit is fine. A person driving within that range is following the spirit of the law...and that "window" allows for the inevitable variation on speedo accuracy.

Stop signs are another. A 'complete' stop is a three count. The point of the sign is to stop and ensure further progress is safe and clear, not to practice counting to three. A slight roll at a stop sign hurts nobody, and I see cops do it as much as anybody else.

Window tint is cut and dry.

ya know you gotta laff about cell phone use when driving all of us knew it was totally dumb yet cell phone use while driving went on for at least15 yrs before it became a driving infraction and allowing police to do so with todays handfree operation is just as dumb.and theres respecting the law and theres also gouging law abiding people for small infractions that occur such as 1 to 15 k over the speed limit, etc as i get older and watch the fines the taxes the insurance the hydro the carbon tax the gas prices i remember when none of this was an issue the big issue was the interest rates at the bank so the big question is is this happening all over canada of is it just BC? Be safe out there guys TIMBUK

I`d have no arguments  and no qualms ... I don`t argue with cops (it`s their call) or the law.

If I was a judge, I`d be a hangman judge.biggrin
