One thing I noticed was the QEW & Macdonald-Cartier Freeway (401) was that they used actual cement for pavement. It was more expensive but was very durable and it lasted decades. Today they use asphalt and seemingly the 401 is under constant repair.

Dad told me that back in the close of the 1930s he worked on the cement curbs on the QEW as a summer job. He couldn't have been more than 17 years old, if that. Then it was off to serve in WWII.

Does anyone remember the toll at the base of the Burlington Skyway bridge? To the east was a roundabout at the Centennial Parkway (Highway 20) interchange (I know, a roundabout on the QEW?!) Trucks often rolled or lost their loads there. I believe it was late 1974 when they removed the tolls & the roundabout.

The Skyway was built in 1958-ish and was featured in artwork for in the 1960 Canadian Pontiac brochure.

Amazing video.....brings back a lot of memories.

I believe the Burlington Skyway toll was removed by Bill Davis because the bridge had been paid for.

That would never happen today, Toronto is looking at tolls for the Don Valley Parking Lot........YIKES!!!....cry

Does anyone remember the tunnel mentioned under the Welland Canal???

Great footage! I enjoyed that, thanks Todd!

I think this 1960 painting by Moma Markovich captured the essence of the old Skyway, seen looking down into Burlington on a summers eve,
