Anybody ever re purpose a pop up camper?

I'm trying,

With much sadness, I ripped down our our beloved and much traveled 1978 Venture trailer. Took a day to knock it down, what a mess. Good thing it was built with Robertson screws. She was pretty rotten though, and had not been used since 2009. Cost $28 to dump the body wood. I'm presently working to turn it into a Gaspe' property trailer. Have to put proper lights on it as we will be travelling at night through QC in June.

Tried looking at Amazon, but I thought PA might have some lighting stuff. Sure enough, they had some excellent thin, stick on dual bar LED's, $24 for the pair. And some great little LED markers for sidelights. 7 dollars each. Might still do a tri light in the center.

Deck pictured as cleaned before the plywood. I'm going to try to use the telescopic roof extensions as side pickets. The old, good condition tip out bed plywood will make for a new deck on top of the old.

Looks like a Star Wars transporter in some way doesn't it...

Any one ever do this?

If you use the hard top on the finished product, make sure it's secure! A number of years ago a group of us went to a swap meet in Nebraska. The guys in the other car were just a bit ahead of us on the highway when an old hardtop trailer converted to just a general trailer lost it's lid in the wind and it my friend hit it head on with his 85 Cutlass. It could have been worse, nothing came through the windshield and we managed to patch the car up enough that it could still make the 600 mile drive home. If I recall correctly the Cutlass was a writeoff when he went to make the insurance claim.

It was actually an emotional thing to break the old girl down. Still have the lanterns though!

Good re purpose!

My Dad bought an old pop up trailer when I was a teenager. It was crushed by a tree that was struck by lightning ("an act of God", and not covered by insurance). Luckily all the innards (sink, heater, fridge, cook top, etc.) were spared, so we stripped it, and sold the innards (the custom van craze was in full swing) to pay for the trailer.

That trailer was made into the greatest hauling/dump trailer. My Dad, years later, sold the trailer for twice the amount he paid for it.

As we speak, a summer neighbour of ours from Maine is looking to get rid of a huge travel trailer that is at the cottage below us. It has deteriorated cosmetically through this past winter. I just might help him out by taking it.smile I'll post pictures later.

Go for it Darryl, the bigger the frame the better! And it'll probably have big suspension as well. Would make a great hauler.

Not a popup, but I re-purposed an old house trailer I was given to a landscape/car hauler.

Got the sides on the utility conversion.

Used the telescopic channels from the camper roof lifts as posts. With some trimming and spot welding, the rear is now setup that the channels still fit into each other, and the rear gate can be easily slid up (for long flat floor items), or entirely out. Stays pinned in place. The front gate can also be removed, but is screwed in place. Left the rear gate uprights tall, as maybe there might be a use for them that high sometime. All in all, the telescopic channels are pretty clever.

Mounted the old Venture emblems as a tribute.

Used the worlds best screws to mount the posts...the Tek Screw. What a godsend, and a great invention. If you've never used them, you're missing out on a great time saver.

Here's the trailer I'm looking at. One front side "blew out" and it is "bubbling" from water infiltration all around ... might have mold in the walls?

The minuses are it's a goose-neck hitch and I just don't really have ANY time to to demo/work on it!

Even if were free, it would still be a nightmare Darryl. The demolition, time, then the disposal of all the crap and fluff that these things contain, would be more trouble than it's worth to get at the frame imop.

Unless of course you have a backhoe, and a pit.

Oh ya! Your size trailer would be much more manageable for me at the moment.

I could see this trailer converted into a tiny home.
