My buddy took his '53 in to be safetied and it failed due to a cracked exhaust manifold. Amazingly the exhaust manifold was broken completely off, but you could barely hear the engine running. Amazing.
But, the bad news is that it won't pass safety with a broken manifold. Any idea where a person could find one? I believe it is a 239 CID L6 engine. The Intake and exhaust manifolds bolt together. The intake manifold is OK, but I'm sure Dick would take the intake-exhaust combination if he could find them.
Any idea what vehicles these engines were used in? Near as I can tell ,they were 1952 to 1954 Pontiac only, but that seems hard to believe.
I know what that is like because i had the same problem with my 57 261 exhaust manifold, it is a very common problem with inline motors. You can not weld the crack because the metal is too brittle. I was able to get a mint exhaust manifold from MINAKER'S in Milford, Ontario. They have been in business since 1925, (check out their web site). Their phone number is 613 476-4547. It is worth a try. Cheers.
